My vet prescribed royal canin urinary s/o and cystaid for my girl peggy, who I posted about recently and we have had a nightmare, the only good thing I can say is that actually it did work but I have had to stop the royal canine as my girl was far too sensitive to take it, she only had it for 5 days, drank 4/5 bowls of water a day and then was totally incontinent .i have been permanently  attached to my washing machine, as my other dog ate it aswell and although not so bad he still peed in the house which was totally unlike him and now I need to buy a new mattress.
I have been slowly going off my head, i still put dry nights sheets on pegs bed but we are still having big accidents once a day despite being put out in the garden or the back door being left open, even though I stopped the food 3 days ago,but I am still giving her cystaid, she is still drinking a lot more than she would normaly so now I don't know if its the cystaid,im going to cut down the cystaid to one every other day to see if that works but im really concerned there might be permanent damage, I did not have this problem before the royal canin and I would never feed it to her again, sadly my vet and just about everyone I have spoken to thinks royal canin is amazing but its not right for my dog.my vets only sell this food so they cant offer me an alternative,at the moment im feeding lathams v plan dry, and sainsburys own wet food which is the only one they both haven't got bored with but im thinking about burns dog food.
Has anyone out there experienced this? at least at the moment I can say my girl is doing brilliant with no problems of blood in urine or anything, heart liver kidney tests are all fine,we had ultrasound and xrays to rule out everything else so its just crystals in her urine we need to control,i just don't want her to go back to that it was dreadful so I need to do everything I can to make sure we avoid this,i know I need to look at lower protein but I cant afford for her to lose any weight either, any advice on diet aswell I would be so grateful, she is a 13 year old saluki.

One of my dogs has today had to have an emergency operation to remove stones from his bladder as they were blocking the urethra and caused a life threatening situation. He is a rescue that I have had since March and today I noticed he was unable to go to the toilet properly - just tiny drips but obviously needed to go as he kept asking to go out.

Luckily my vet is open as normal on a Saturday and Sunday. I already had an appointment for another of my dogs to have his booster injections and so took Spin along too in the hope they could see him as well - I thought he had a urine infection. On examining him the vet could feel stones in his bladder and so he was given a sedative and x-rayed. This showed at least ten stones and one was blocking the entrance to the urethra so he had to be operated on. The stones were the size of peas with two much, much bigger - 2 to 3cm across- and it was one of these that was causing the problem.

My dogs are raw fed and he too started on raw food when he came to live with me. The stones are being sent away to determine which type they are and the best way forward for him. I am hoping to keep him on a raw diet still but may need to make some adjustments depending on the lab results.  He had a very rough start in life and didn't have a good diet to begin with so this may have some bearing on his problem.

What a start in life for him!  I do hope that everything goes well for him now he is with you.  Sending positive vibes.

Poor chap! :-) As you know, my Piglet had a bladderstone several years ago because he blocked. Amazingly his only stone was 4mm (we know it was the only stone because the vet had a very careful search while the bladder was open) but had lodged itself at the entrance to the urethra and blocked him. It's painful surgery to recover from, but Piglet's been fine, with dietary adjustment, ever since.  I'm not an expert but I'm more than happy to advise any way I can.

Don't know if this may be worth considering: http://www.nutriment.co/low-purine-phosphorus-formula/

I have a cat who has had a lot of recent problems, including a vet stay of 4 days. He's on Cystaid now. It definitely does help him. However all my cats are 100 % raw fed so that hasn't made any difference, in fact I have been trying to find out whether too much phosphorus (hence bone in the diet) could have CAUSED it.
