Can someone give me advice on this as the kennel club have told me no shaving, but been told by all breeders the hhl gets shaved for showing

Hopefully someone who has the breed will be on soon, but it's my understanding that the KC objection was to skin abrasions or sores caused by the shaving. As long as you are careful with the clipping, I can't imagine why they would complain any more than clipping any other breed?? I could be completely wrong though!

After all Poodles, Lowchens, and Portuguese water dogs can all shaved

Surely the difference is that Poodles, Löwchens and Portuguese Water Dogs aren't naked anywhere to start with, and will have a layer of fur left, whereas a Chinese Crested will end up totally bald in parts and that is the object of shaving them, to remove any fluff? Thus such a dog would be far more likely to get a rash. Although like said, surely if done carefully, who could tell?

The lowchens and Portugese and shaved butt style poodles are taken down to the skin surely?

I don't know much about grooming Poodles, but I did work as a groomer many years ago, and as far as I remember, you did Poodles' faces etc with blade 15, which does leave a very fine layer of fur. You did paws with number 30 (or a special toe blade) which took even more off but still left fur, but when I worked at the vets, you used blade 40 to shave before surgery as that was the only blade that actually removed ALL fur, like using a razor.

the KC objection may be that the dog is not meeting breed standard if they have hair when they shouldn't have and shaving would be cheating.

I knew someone with Hairless dogs and she used to use human hair removing cream on them!!!

As others mentioned the skin is susceptible to rashes/burns from excessive shaving or the use of hair removal products, which is the main reason for now allowing shaving as stated on the Kennel Club website. Since the standard also calls for no large patches of hair anywhere on the body for a hairless, shaving a hairy hairless would be altering appearance of an incorrect dog so as to make it correct for the ring.

Basically if you shave hair, or use depilatory creams, from a hairless you're cheating; it's against KC rules, and if you're found out any wins will be removed.

As I understand it, the Powder Puffs are shown in Full coat, and the Hairless are shown natural, no shaving or clipping.

Of course, there will always be those who cheat :(

But remember, if you are cheating and breeding from those dogs, then the faults are being perpetuated.   The only way to improve things is to be totally honest and only breed from the best :-)

Actually, there are two different types of hairless. The true hairless can be shown naturally as it has minimal hair to begin with. However, the hairy hairless carries a lot more coat and have things like a strip of hair going all the way down the back rather than just a mane. From a show standpoint, having a hairy hairless can actually be better because the extra coat looks more flashy in the ring and the dogs don't tend to have quite as serious skin/dental problems. However, in order to make some hairy hairless look correct for the ring according to the breed standard, you would have to shave them.

Which you're not allowed to do.

I was told by someone that a lot of the hairless that are seen in the show ring are not true hairless but hairy hairless as  they do have more hair and then when the body hair is removed their mane and furnishings are a lot flashier.

well, I didn't know that that shaving or clipping was forbidden...when I judged my first match night I was presented with a number of noticeably stubbly cresteds...not nice for either of us :-(
