We had t take a Boxer to vet this evening at 6pm as he had a funny spell, I thought at first that he had a stroke as he just laid there with eyes open, but nobody at home. He eventually came round but was very wobbly. The vet said his heart was very fast and called through to Newmarket referral. They said to bring him in this evening for ECG testing, but warned that this testing would cost at least £2000 and did we still want to take him in.
Is this the usual price for ECG test on a Saturday evening, ( it is now 7.30 and he will be there around 8.15pm ) It just sounded a bit high, although we didn't ask 'how much' they felt they should tell us though, so was this because it is extra high?

Is this a case yet again, that when you are insured they take advantage or am I being too suspicious.

Sounds expensive to me to be honest but guessing the cost is expensive as it's out of hours to normal surgery times.

Referral can cost £250-500 to be sent to a specialist depending on the referral centre.

Even for out of hours that sounds incredible to me!  I can't recall what the ECG cost for my old dobe on her referrals but it was nothing like that - her echo scan cost around £350 and the ECG was a lot less than that.

I would guess that the estimate is for being seen out of hours and full investigations that may be needed and hospitalisation and treatment. Does add up very quickly :(
I hope things went ok.

Zuma was there about 14 mth ago and they charged £66 per night for 'B+B', £192 for 1st consult (midweek/daytime) and £52 for sedation so as reddog says for w/end evening and estimate for full treatment it wouldn't take long to add up.

He is not doing so well. Had a heart scan today but his heart rate is still around 140 ( it should be around 80 give or take ) but it was 270 on Saturday. The blood was rushing around doing nothing. We have been advised that it is a very dangerous condition, but they are hoping to stabilise him with medication as he keeps spiking very high, but not much else they can do.
We hope to get him home with meds so he can be comfortable for whatever time he has. It seems that he could suddenly spike and be gone, good for him but a shock for us even though we know it may happen anytime.

Really sorry it isn't better news, but where theres life theres hope :)

They just phoned to say that they are taking him off the drip and moving onto oral meds. If this works then they will let him home tomorrow, but first they are going to do X-rays , just to make sure nothing else is causing these problems. It seems as though it is an electrical fault in the heart ( laymans terms ) the top part of the heart is out of sync with the bottom part. Lets hope the oral meds work enough for him to come home, I can't wait.
