I am to hopefully be taking a stray staffie in next week. He was due to be destroyed this week and needs his tail amputating due to a severe flea allergy that has caused him to chew the end off. I have got a large crate ready but we dont know if hes dog or cat friendly so have to be careful as I have three other dogs. One bitch and two dogs and also two cats. My son says he is very quiet and cowers a lot so obviously has been mistreated. If he doesnt get on with the others I will be looking to rehome him. I thought he deserved a chance though. Can anybody give me some ideas how to introduce them all, we are going to do it on neutral territory. I have borrowed a very large crate as I dont want him to be left alone with the others so will be crated when we arent around.

I have introduced a rescue dog to my gang many times and when I do I go to a strange field as if they are going on a walk. Somewhere they do not feel is their territory, then they meet up as you would when meeting strange dogs on a walk. If all goes well ( hopefully ) then we all walk home together after they have had a good walk all together. So far this has always worked for me. Once they have walked with the new dog they don't usually have a problem with it coming home with them. However I don't have a close family member walk the dog as they could be jealous, so I prefer to enlist the help of a friend.
This is my way.

When I introduced an adult dog to my two Staffies, one of whom is very dog aggressive, I had the luxury of a couple of weeks introduction before the dog moved in .
I took them all out for walks with the help of a friend, I intially had my friend walk the new dog a few yards in front of mine, so they could observe the safe end and have a good sniff at the scent he was leaving behind, they got as much info about him as possible without feeling threatened. I then turned it about and had them walk in front, it only took a few days before the Staffies were ok, I then progressed to car journeys and house visits.
Once the new dog came to stay for good, it was pretty much plain sailing .

When my two dogs were first introduced it was on a walk quite far apart. They didnt take too much notice of each other so we gradually walked them closer together until they were on lead side by side.
They spent a bit of time on neutral territory (at the rescue centre) and got on fine...the ocassional growl but nothing serious.
When we brought them home we travelled in separate cars and took them to a field for a walk then came home via the garden-this may or may not be possible dependong on your house/garden layout. It worked well as our existing dog could run in and out as he pleased whilst our new dog could explore the garden and come into the house in his own time. Unbeknown to us he wasnt house trained so must have been very daunting to enter a home for the first time.

If you have a dog who has been mistteated he may love the security or joining a pack or it may be that hes too threatened by it. I hope for you and him its the former :-) . Of course, all the usual stuff...lots of praise patience and treats will be a must too :-)

Good luck. Keep us updated.x
