Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / When to reduce food

My GR pup is four months and doing well on AG large puppy/junior. It's been a while since I have had a pup and I've forgotten when to start to reduce her intake to that of an adult dog. Currently she is on three meals a day about 400grms a day at the moment which is about right given her age and weight. I've been keeping an eye on her waistline and feeling ribs, but haven't worried too much about how much she eats as she is growing fast and she polishes off all that she is given! However aware that retrievers can eat for England given the oppourtunity. I will start to encourage her to two meals a day when she's around six months (she can tell the time already!), but want to know what age roughly to start to reduce more to an adults amount of food? Also what age do you recommend to switch to adult food. I think I have done the switch at about a year old, but I have heard I should leave it up to 18 months?

I keep Goldens on 3 meals a day until 9 months, then reduce to 2 but increase the amount slightly in each meal so that the total food intake does not reduce. Just keep an eye on the weight and feed accordingly.  I would switch to adult food at about a year but it may depend on the make.

Did your breeder not give you a feeding guide?  I reduce my pups down to 2 meals a day at 6 months if I feel they're ready.  The amount increases up until they're about a year old, although I do always feed 'by eye' and I do like to see a slightly chunky pup as opposed to a skinny one.  After a year I cut back their food gradually to that of my adult dogs. remembering that every dog is slightly different and always feed 'by eye' and vary the amount given fairly regularly.
If you continue to feed AG - it will tell you on the pack up to what age it is suitable for.  For example Royal Canin GR Junior lasts them until they are 15 months old.
Hope this helps.

The breeder did give a feeding guide, Ells-bells, but not that far along, I think I will mention that to them. Their handover information was amazing, not just a couple of sheets of paper, but a ring binder choc a bloc full of all sorts of useful stuff, just not an extensive long term feeding guide.
I usually feed by eye, but wanted to have some sort of rough guidance of when and how much.

A lot will depend on how active they are and how they hold weight.

My last two pups have had to stay on higher amounts for longer than some of their predecessors and in fact had to have an increase at about the time of their first big moult.

My 16 month old is eating nearly twice the amount of the adults, as she seemed to drop with with her moult in the summer.
