Topic Dog Boards / Health / nail caps for infection control

Hi, my 11 1/2 year old male gsd has a mis-shapen nail (exercise injury when young) on his left fore paw (outside nail) and for the second time in twenty months there is now an infection in the toe (inflamed skin at base of toe where nail starts). He is again on a long course of antibiotics.  The first time this happened the vet was going to remove the nail but decided against it.

As this has happened for a second time I am now trying to find something that will protect his nail from future trauma and further risk of infection. I am using a rubber disposable boot at the moment, to keep dirt out and am considering a boot but have just seen 'nail caps' and was wondering if any one has used them for a medical reason.  Any other suggestions would be most helpful too.

Thank you

I use nail caps on my dog who scuffs one foot when she walks, they have been a real god send, they last for about two weeks before they fall off.
If you do decide to get them, be careful who you buy from, as there appear to be some poor quality ones out there, some I've had have just arrived in a small plastic bag, with none of the packaging, and I've found these to be quite shoddy.

One of ours scuffs both front feet (nails) very badly,  not so bad in the summer when we exercise in the fields but once they get too wet do more pavement walking & then have to check them daily. When they get to short, build them up with super glue!

Thanks guys,

I am worried about using any kind of glue on his nail because I think this is where the infection is gaining access or would it be safe?  I have considered nail varnish to create a barrier but again am worried.  I do keep the nail tidy with a grinder and that seems to keep him comfortable but as the nail is mishapened on the inside it's difficult to know if this is the best thing to do.

Ideally I would just like to protect the nail but it may be easier to cover the whole paw with a boot and limit him playing pawball.

I've used the caps for about two years with no ill effects, I must admit, I had the same concerns.
But if the problem is the nail bed, I can't see how the caps would help.

Have been lucky that he (touch wood) hasn't had nail bed problems. Tend to keep his feet clean, wash after walks, can't wear boots as they make him trip over. Don't have to do it too often & it just gives him enough protection allowing him to enjoy longer walks in the cooler weather.
