Hi All,

I live in a lungworm hotspot (Southwest) and have just completed a 7 day course of Panacur at the lungworm dosage that I do twice a year as a precaution.

I am looking into having the dogs tested for lungworm larvae using the baermann test and am wondering if anyone has used this,

Is it only done through the vets or can you use a lab yourself and send samples? Does anyone have an idea on cost? And I believe it is done using faecal samples for 3 days in a row..do you send them off together or do you have to send each sample fresh each day?

I can only tell you what I did about 8 years ago.  Unfortunately I did it through a SW vet and the charge to send them off to Langford was a bit steep.  But I collected poo samples over 3 days from two Collies and had to take them all in together.  I vaguely recollect that I was told all three days poos were mixed together, but my recall isn't as good as it used to be.  Senility has set in I think.  I can't even remember how much I paid. 

I do twice a year as precaution too.  Panacur is reliable.  I've never had a problem using it.  So I don't believe in rocking the boat.  If it aint broke, don't fix it!  :-)

Like you I do them with panacur at treatment dose as a precaution....I seriously don't fancy the advocate routine at all!

I have now found a company recommended by Nick Thompson, a holistic vet,called wormcount.com.  They do a screening from samples you send in yourself and are apparently very reliable,
