Hello, just wanted to ask all you experienced peeps. What is the best age to bring a puppy home? What age is best for toilet training etc? Thanks dudes in advance

I'm sure someone more experienced than I will be along to answer your query, but it does depend on the breed as to the best age.

Toilet training can begin as soon as you bring the puppy home, and in many cases a good breeder may already have started this... although the process of going to a new home can upset that, meaning you have to start again from scratch. However, if you anticipate starting from scratch anyway, then that's no loss.

I agree with MsTemeraire.  It depends on their living conditions at the moment. Bad, bring home at 8wks or sooner. Good, bring home when breeder advises.  It used to be 8wks, now it can be up to 12wks.  As regards toilet training that depends on your living arrangements.  I want mine to know the garden is where you go, so I bring them in to the back garden first regardless of the weather.  As they will want to wee after their journey I bring them in, put them down and let them sniff around and when they've been I heap lots of praise on them, never a treat as this could upset their stomach.

It depends on the breed; medium and large breeds tend to be homed from about 7 or 7½ weeks, whereas toy breeds are often retained by the breeder till about 12 weeks. The sooner house-training starts, the better - a good breeder will already have made a start (not by using puppy pads!) but your home will be a totally different situation so you will need to strat from scratch, but at least it should be quicker if the idea is already in place!

You may want to consider putting your puppy into a crate during the night. It is unusual for a puppy to wee or poo in a crate, but you will need to get up during the night the let the puppy out until it can hang on all night. I have used a crate for the first time with this pup and it has been a fantastic tool. She learnt very quickly to hold on during the night and that she had to go outside to relieve herself.

As others have said, it partly depends on the breed, smaller puppies should come home later. Start toilet training as soon as you get the puppy, but don't expect him/her to be perfect for some weeks, maybe even a few months if you have a stubborn breed, some of the toys are said to be particularly hard to housetrain.
