This is nice link for having a dog friendly garden...
http://gardeninganddogs.com/ I've got rid of my lawns and layed a lot of pink flags in mine,as we are in a hot climate and the grass just fried. Around the borders I've put raised beds and planted climbers such as jasmine, climbing roses, wisteria and an ornamental apple over the pergola.
in the beds them selves I have many bushes which withstand the two big dogs I have...lavender,roses,spiraea,tree peony ,weilegia, hibiscus, and so on...
In between the bushes I've sown lots of flowers such as zinnia, and other perennial daises ....it's worked really well. The only thing this year is my new pup started to rip out my new jasmine hedge,so I've protected it with a plastic screen till it is established. he's just started to leave the plants alone ,with a leave it command so I'm hoping to add more to the flowers next year.
