Hi, as with my previous post I am new to feeding a raw diet our hounds (medium breed) have been on it a week now and its been a fantastic experience so far. They are about to have their first bone meal which I am a bit anxious about I got some duck necks from Natures menu I would be grateful of hearing from anyone who has fed them before their expeiriences and how their dogs coped with them?

Thanks

> I got some duck necks

I've never fed duck neck, but my two have been eating turkey/chicken neck for years without a problem :)

Many thanks Daisy appreciate your reply just feeling a bit anxious as it will be the first time I have given them bones :/

I'm not currently a raw feeder as I don't have freezer room, and can't get raw at cost effective prices.

Mine have always had what raw I can pick up, and have had such things as poultry and even calf necks (from retired slaughter man who sometimes goes in part time when they need him) no problem.

In fact they have always had some bones from about 4 weeks of age, but as a supplement to their kibble based diets

Necks are great, my dogs love them :)

They are obviously quite high in bone so do watch the amounts you feed, or your dogs may get a bit constipated.  I tend to follow a high bone meal with some liver, which balances things out a bit, but a kibble meal also helps.  My dogs are predominantly raw fed but they don't like fresh fish much so I feed a fish kibble with added sardines (or salmon mousse) once a week or so.  If I feed this after a large turkey neck it seems to prevent the painful poo (yuk, sorry) which one of my dogs really suffers from.

If you buy bagged poultry necks from some suppliers they have been broken into smaller lengths.  These are fine for experienced raw eaters but can be an issue for dogs that are new to raw as they can be swallowed whole.  Don't feed the smaller bits unless you are able to supervise.  Chicken wings are very good for first timers as they can be pulled out to their full length and are less likely (tho not impossible) to be swallowed in a nano second!

Finally, don't forget that all boney meals can be fed frozen - this will slow your dogs down a bit, is great for teeth and is very satisfying for dogs that enjoy taking their time chewing and knawing.
