with a med sized breed how much more growing would you expect a 6 month puppy to do? I met up with one of my dog puppies yesterday and he is an inch smaller than his sister at the shoulder and she is still smaller than her mum who is at the bottom end of the standard. Dad was a good size but pup has at least another 3 inches to grow to reach the lower end of size limit for males. Am I worrying to early or is this normal for males? I have had bitches almost exclusively. My own male is 14 and big. I have pictures of him in the showring at his first show and he is the same size as other more mature males. This chap is lovely but just very small.
Whatever the breed is they continue bone growth till about 18 months but individual dogs with have spurts at different times. I once had a small bitch who continued upward growth until about 14 months but have known others who are too tall at 6 months but do not continue to extend the long bones.
I have had similar my most recent girls have all shot up and been almost full size at 6 months (so worrying about them growing too big), but then stopped going up.
With others I have been surprised to find they have gained half an inch up to 18 months plus.
It is just one of the reasons why neutering before 2 years is not to be recommended if fact should just not be done the natural growth is far to heavily interfered with the effect on the bone can be seen but that to the rest of the animals organs are not so obvious.
