I am to mate my boxer bitch with a colleagues male boxer. We have discuused paying a stud fee of the price of a puppy. What we need to find out is what if only one puppy is produced. What should the stud fee be then.
I would appreciate any replies.

Do you mean your colleague wants a puppy instead of you paying a stud fee up front? Or do you mean, he wants you to pay a stud fee which is equivalent to the price of a puppy? I don't know what stud fees in Boxers are generally, but in my breed, only the top stud dogs in the breed command stud fees as high as the price of a puppy. I would never agree to letting the owner of the stud dog have a puppy instead of paying a stud fee upfront - this sort of arrangement is fraught with difficulties - you've already mentioned one now, what happens if only one puppy is born? These sort of arrangements benefit the stud dog owner far more than the bitch owner & I would advise you to arrange to pay a reasonable stud fee now & then you won't have to worry about what happens afterwards. Hopefully, the dog you have chosen is a good specimen of the breed & is a proven stud, as well as having passed all the necessary health tests such as heart testing (v important in Boxers). The same applies to your bitch of course :-)

You can have whatever arrangement suits the both of you I would suggest that you put it in writing though. Pardon me for asking but is your colleagues dog suited to your bitch in type and pedigree it seems that would be rather a good coincidence if it were, if you are not sure it would probably be a good idea to ask the breeder of your bitch what they think of the match. I presume both have been heart tested if not you run the risk of the puppy purchasers suing you if the puppy develops a heart problem and you did not do what you could to prevent it people are quite well aware of their rights these days. Something else to discuss with the stud dog owner, if a lot of puppies result would they take equal responsibity in the event of not all the puppies getting
suitable homes by the time they are past the 12 week mark and are looking less appealing to the purchasers, also will they help if a puppy is returned when the owners circumstances change or they are unable to cope with adolescent. What if you end up having to have a caesarian section and possibly no live pups result who will bear the financial loss, you I suspect :). All these things can and do happen and are worth considering before you proceed.

Please consider this carefully, reducing heart problems etc has been done only by the monitoring and breeding of health checked dogs, if you are really intent on a litter get your bitch heart tested at least and ideally hip scored and go for the best stud dog for your bitch making sure he is on the Boxer heart tested list.
In Boxers stud dogs are very reasonable prices anyway and certainly not the price of a puppy, for example we used a newly made up champion from one of the countries top kennels last year and only paid £250 and we had a beautiful line bred litter I would certainly not expect to pay any more than £300 for Multiple CC winners.
If you need a bit of help most top breeders would gladly look at a copy of her pedigree and point you in the right direction but saying that if it was my dog the bitch would have to be of a good standard before I would let anybody use him and I would want to know that the owner was quite aware of the work involved in raising a litter, on a note of caution a lady I know recently bred her 4th Boxer litter and I consider her to know what she is doing, the bitch ended up with a sudden severe mastitis and had to have half of her mamary glands taken away and she was left with a large litter to hand rear and the bitch was on a drip at the vets where it was touch and go for a while. She does have a lovely litter and luckily the bitch survived but also she has an horrendous vets bill. If I were you I would think very carefully!
