Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Puppy food versus adult food

I spotted this question on another forum and I thought I would ask the same question here as many of you are breeders and I think you will be able to answer the question well.
I'm feeding my 12 week large breed puppy on a puppy kibble. I understand this is her main growing period and she needs a higher protein food, but many adult foods are high in protein too. Is there any reason why she should have a special puppy type food or is it a marketing tool to get us to spend more money as puppy kibble is quite often more expensive then adult food?
I have a 15 kgs bag of Burns lamb and rice left over from my last dog which I will feed my pup eventually, but I'm aware that Burns is low in protein and I assume is unsuitable at the moment. When would it be a good age to introduce it to her?
