Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Which Puppy Pen

Which puppy pen do you prefer and why?

I am torn if to keep with the Croft showman zinc/gold puppy panels (small squares)
or to go with the new modular puppy pens such a Croft Freedom Puppy pen or one
such as the dog health one.

The one thing I do worry about is puppy legs or mouths getting caught.

I always use vinyl/lino on the floor so trays aren't an absolute necessity.

With the old showman panels pups could climb up the corners of the pen to try to escape...
However I do have human 24/7 supervision so they aren't normally left alone.

I just need to replace two panels on my old pen which obviously is cheaper
than the new modular type but the new modular types do look appealing...
Help...

I have the freedom pen which has positives and negatives:

Positive: Sturdy
             good size
             adaptable
             never had a puppy escape
             hardwearing
             Quality metal work
             Metal whelping bars very good
Adjustable height levels at door point

Negatives: Bars slightly too wide for smaller breeds, (once had a little head get stuck, but solved this with plywood runner until puppies slightly bigger)
Can be hard to clean where the wire meets the outer edges (needs a scrubbing brush)
Quite bulky to store when not in use

Overall I must like it as I have purchased the additional sections to make it bigger....

I use these, they come in 2 different sizes, slot together easily and addtional panels are available http://www.doghealth.co.uk/collections/puppy-pens/products/puppy-pen-run-big-foot. They're also substantial enough to use outside and don't blow over.

I have the dog health one too. I was really very pleased with it, it is sturdy and the finish on the metal work is quite thick so no danger of it chipping off. The door latches have a lift up first and then slide mechanism which stops accidental opening which I liked too.  I ended up with one pup staying a bit longer and was able to shrink the pen to a four panel to act as a crate for night times. You can also order extra panels as well.

Very pleased with mine.

Croft freedom playpens here, we used them for our last litter when the puppies were on their feet and out of the snowsilk box. Now wouldn't use anything else.

Years ago when we had Boxers we used the other Croft pens that fitted together with white plastic clips, we had puppies standing on their back legs and getting a foot stuck at the top and also puppies playing and getting their jaw stuck on the bars of the older style pen. Luckily someone is with them day and night but the scream when puppy had jaw/teeth stuck was terrible.

Croft Freedom pens here too, cheaper alternatives are dangerous as we found out when we purchased one from ebay, one of my girls got their leg stuck in the gap where the two panels slot together, thankfully I was home and managed to free her after lots of screaming from her, had I not been there I think she would have broke her leg.

Thanks all for the experiences of the different types of 'new' style puppy pens.

May go to investigate further at Champ show and measure the space and see
which combinations will work and give the most room.

I've used Croft Freedom for years and have vast number of panels -sufficient for large indoor and outdoor pens. They are easy to fit together and have proved remarkably weatherproof. But.. we still have the problem of puppies getting their jaws caught in the mesh. They usually manage to release unaided  -but still a concern.

we have these and were happy with them with the last litter.

I like the fact you can clip them together so make round moveable shapes or screw them together making solid square.
Used from birth  till the puppy that stayed was big enough to mix with the others...
Cable tied some plastic to the sides to make walls solid (could have easily put rails in too but decided not to) and so no paws/jaws stuck when babies were small and removed this to open the world up for them once little bigger.
