Whilst cutting the grass by our pond in the paddock I realised there were lots of wasps going down a hole in the ground so figure we have an underground wasps nest. I would not be bothered but this is where the dogs are allowed and one of them is bound to investigate and get stung. I puffed some diameteceous earth down there and covered with a brick, due to the large amount that were buzzing around I uncovered it as they were very angry, I have now placed something near the hole to try and keep the dogs away.
Anyone any ideas how to get rid of them? it was bad enough when I discovered a grass snake living in the pond but now I have wasps too :(

We have a wasp nest under the tiles of the roof. Normally I wouldn't be too worried, but we have a puppy who investigates everything with her mouth and I've started to find the occasional wasp walking about on the patio. It cost a fortune to get the pest man round to deal with rats and he was only there a few minutes laying bait, dread to think how much it will cost to get rid of the wasps.

We've just had a wasps nest removed from near the back door, it was £85. Having seen how simple I was then another time I'd try it myself. Buy either the white foam type spray or some powder, get a funnel and at night time (when he wasps are quiet) spray/pour into the nest. Do it as quickly as you can (obviously !). Don't cover the hole up as its when wasps fly into or leave the nest that it works, the powder gets on them and they carry it further in.

I won't be coming to visit you then as my deep seated fear of snakes comes from when I was a child and one slithered up my legs when I was picking raspberrys in the veg patch at the bottom of the garden.
I thought it was bees that had nests in the ground rather than wasps ?

I thought it was bees that had nests in the ground rather than wasps ?Wasps will make nests just about

My eldery MIL had a wasp's nest outside her kitchen door - it was about 15" tall - so not tiny!
OH bought the stuff off the net, came with a special netted hat and all the spray to eliminate it. Worked really well and didn't cost the earth either :-)

Personally I would call out a pest control firm (I really don't like wasps so happy to let the professionals deal with them). I would ask for an estimate from a few firms first and also ask how quickly they can come out as discussions with my neighbours show that there can be big differences in price and time to respond.
You can buy stuff to kill wasps - I think the big DIY stores sell it.
We had what I thought were wasps in a hole in the ground but they were actually some type of bee (much slimmer than the normal fat bumble bees).
Hope you get it sorted soon as it is a big worry especially with the dogs who don't understand to leave it alone.

This year they seem to be nesting in the ground more.
Saturday I was cutting my paddock and went over a wasp nest, got stung 4 times!!!!
Monday I was cutting a grave and ran over another wasp nest and got stung twice (once in the same place)
Later that afternoon my boss found another one.
Then Friday I was mowing and mowed beside another one, luckily saw it in time.!!!!
I have NEVER mowed over wasps nests before in the nearly 15 years doing this job!!!!
Lea :)

I would also ring local pest control people if you are worried about someone furrie or otherwise . Some councils will do them for a fee otherwise google someone local You can just leave them and it will die down in the autumn winter
Shame you have gone so far or would send our window cleaner /painter/ everthing including wasp nest man.
He did a great job on ours for £25
Lea thats not good hope you are ok with that many stings. Each time I get one the reaction is worse :(
Ailso I think they are ground nesting bees we have some near us

We were out today and were faced with a swarm of flying ants.
Horrible things :-(
I bought some powder to blast down the hole, however due to the rain I haven't done anything yet.
Now we have about 30 bees crawling all over the grass on the other side of the paddock right by the gate where the dogs enter ( typical)
Next it will be the locusts :(

Hope you can get something sorted. As we move on towards autumn, the wasps will be out looking for somewhere to hibernate, and they grow slower but more aggressive when the temperature drops. I once had a nest close to the bathroom and in September there were wasps coming in almost seeming drunk, but very hard to remove. The landlord sent pest control round. I don't know if councils still remove wasps nests, but if you are worried tell them someone in your home would go into anaphylactic shock if stung, that might help.
This is true, my husband does have to go to hospital if stung :( On the day of our sons christening hubby opened his underwear drawer after showering and was stung- on the finger, so off to hospital we went before the church! I think I will contact the council and see if they deal with them, if not I will contact the pest control company that we used before we moved in- we had bats in the loft. It's like Wildlife on One here :)

Bats are protected.... I would welcome some moving in here!

We get bats and its a privilege to have them. They come and go, but generally turn up in the spring early summer and squeeze in between the roof tiles and the liner. If you go up into the loft , you can hear them pattering about. I think it's a nursery roost. They will stay for a month or so, then move on to another house nearby, after a while they will come back again. I counted over 80 of them coming out one evening.

Having seen and enjoyed seeing bats flying over next doors garden, we're planning on putting up a bat box in ours.

Most councils have stopped things like pest control - we checked before we wasted money calling out the firm we used. Honestly, if the nest is underground it would be so easy to pour the powder down the hole and the effect is almost instant. If done in the evening most of the wasps will be in the nest - the ones that aren't come back and carry the powder down with them.

phew iI am glad it was his finger that was stung !!
Me too Chris, we ended up at the hospital before the christening ;)

Luckily i am okay. But they have flared up today again. Dare not get stung again otherwise i think it will be be worse as the second lot was worse than the first.
Definitely wasps as watched them go in and out of the nests :-(
I don't know how people cope with bad reactions to stings :-(

Just found another wasp nest, and one we will have to do something about. It seems to be in a clump of plants just outside the kitchen window and something the pup likes to jump into when having the 'zoomies', which is exactly what will happen to me if the wasps come pouring out!!!

Lea are you taking piriton ? or simliar it seems to help unless the reaction becomes bad then off to a& e quick smart !!

Thank you Furriefriends, I have been taking anti histamine tablets and rubbing bite cream on them. Just very alert to wasp nests now until my body recovers from the 6 :)
Lea :)
It finally stopped raining long enough for me to blast some powder down the hole last night. This morning I checked and no activity so it looks like it has done the trick.
I don't like killing anything but I couldn't run the risk with the dogs, our 14 year old still has a mark on his muzzle where he was stung 13 years ago and he still hasn't learnt his lesson.
you can use for it
artificial grass, It is very kid-glove which your pet love it. No too much maintenance and no need to watering. With that make your house greenery and beautiful, spice up your life style.
