So, my girl is on day 61 and is like a beached whale. Still going for her walks, although very slowly and at around 9.30-10pm at night when its cooler.
I have my whelping box in my living room (it's a big living room) and there it will stay until my babies go to their new homes.
My question is about the heat. As I have patio doors going from my living room into the garden it can get quite warm in there when the sun is shining through, which is most of the day. If need be I can close my blinds so that the sun isn't through then it will be much cooler, I'm having to do this a lot anyway.
When Honey has her puppies I'm thinking about getting a fan for the living room to try and keep her cool. I've never had to do this and always need my radiators on to keep the room at a constant temperature for pups and also had a heat pad in the corner of the box too.
What would you do to try and keep bitch a bit more comfortable?
I'm worried if I use a fan, it will be too drafty for the babies. My room is currently 23 degrees and its not even 8 am and no sun at all, in fact its quite cloudy/foggy. Honey has spent the whole of the last 4 weeks laid in the kitchen on the cold tiles, I really don't want her to feel like she's too uncomfortable not to be in the box but need it to be right for the babies too.
What would you do?

In Italy we use fans in every room..the dogs adore to lie in front of the draught. However I don't as it triggers my arthritis. In my bedroom I point the fan at the wall so that the air deflects .There is less draught, but the air circulates better and seems to cut the humidity.I have wall thermometers in each room and the fan doesn't actually bring room temp down,it does however feel better to have it going.
Id keep the blinds closed so the room has less chance to heat up and run the fan at the other end of the room, pointed at the wall so the pups are well away from the draught.
I've taken the heat mat out during the day as the thermometer says it's 29.6°C in the box. Pups are spread out and quite happy, you have to be careful of overheating too, the pups will lie with their mouths open if they are too hot.
Fans are fine as long as they're not directed directly at the box, the walls of the box will stop draughts. Mum in particular loves to come out and lie in front of the fan. I do keep an extra special eye on the temp at night as the nights, here anyway, are quite cool. I just pop the heat mat back in and pop them on it, they get off if they get too hot xx

I have always used heat pads and radiators - until one terribly hot summer, where my bitch was distressed by the heat.
I actually bought an expensive air conditioning unit for her in the whelping room. I haven't even got AC myself!
I have a fan - just position it so the air circulates above the puppies. My bitch whelped yesterday in all the heat - I draped wet towels over her head and back to help keep her cool and had the fan on. She coped amazingly well - bless her.
