Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / New pups, mum very well but hardly any discharge?
- By Hachiko Date 19.07.13 21:06 UTC
Hi,

My girl delivered early hours of yesterday morning, long first stage and then first pup stuck for a while with head down presentation. Just before we set off for vets I tried once more and managed to reposition the head and out she popped...huge pup in perfect health, phew!!

6 more average size pups flew out and mum settled in whelping box with them...as predicted she again popped them out while walking around, was following her with a warm towel trying to catch them before they hit the ground; nightmare dog!! I thought we still had one to come, but this mum never settles until after all the births so thought I was mistaken. An internal showed nothing in the birth canal and she'd totally stopped contracting and was happily feeding her babies.

Sadly I had been right and the eighth pup was stillborn 3 hours after the 7th, suddenly without any warning and took my girl by surprise as much as me! It had been tucked under the rib and I wasn't surprised as it had taken so long to come down, again a huge pup though. I tried everything including Dopram but knew when I initially saw her it would be a miracle, but at least I tried my hardest, cried buckets as always, blamed myself...you know the score :(

Anyway everything fine, mum doing a brilliant job with loads of milk already, all pups very content and gained well already, gaining 30g to 108g at first weighing this morning. Mum ate all 7 placentas so her normal not eating much for three days after the birth isn't concerning me this time...she didn't eat any of them last time and I was frantic, meanwhile she was chilled and three days later was wolfing down anything offered with relish.

The only thing niggling at me is that she's hardly discharging at all, the odd spot and she's washing occasionally but nothing to speak of at all. The last time she whelped she bled for weeks, took her to the vets in the end but everything was fine and David said it was 'just her way of doing things'. I sort of expected the same this time so to have less than normal seems wrong. I've checked and there's definitely nothing in there, she has her slim figure back and her birth canal is clear, no nasty smells.
Temperature is normal, she's drinking well, no signs of a problem.

So basically what I'm asking is has anyone had a girl who hasn't shown much of a discharge afterwards please? I'm heading towards taking her to be checked but have no real reason to do so iykwim.

Thanks in advance x

We've had this as well, started to feel quite smug at the lack of mess and then after a couple of days normal discharge commenced :)

Thanks, yes you're spot on we've had some overnight lol. I think it's more that there was a lot last time rather than less this time iykwim. She's a really clean girl too, bless her. Pups still gaining weight well and mum very happy xx
