Ive been bitten too, several times - really sore. Luckily not the humungous ones that also fly around here, just the normal ones, but they are bad enough.
Are you sure it was hornets and not these monsters?
My worst one was a horsefly bite, not sure about some of the others. Been back to the doctor today for another dose of different antibiotics as the first lot haven't helped :(
Horse flies are worst my hand got bit it swelled up like football its definitely hornets their awful Apollo sheth all swollen we have been putting raw garlic in his feed and hole bottle. Homemade fly spray on him
Down here in Devon there has been a lot of publicity about horseflies as a man has just died from a bite! I'm getting eaten alive on Dartmoor and my dogs have had a bite or two :(

If it's hornets you could try .... Vitamin B
I take brewers yeast tablets during the spring/summer/autumn as I'm a wasp and hornet magnet. I had a real phobia because of it and rarely went out unless it was winter. Then I discovered Vit B/ Brewers Yeast tablets. Haven't been bothered since!
I did an experiment as I didn't believe it at first. Took one ripe peach, cut in half and brushed one half over with Marmite (yeast spread ;-) ) then put both halves outside on the windowsill for the wasps. The half with Marmite was completely ignored!
Thinking a Marmite + water spray might work for a horse, if he can't have Brewers yeast ;-)
