Hi all
My bitch is on day 12 of season, have been to the stud on day 9, 10, and 12. Had a tie on day 10 for 15 mins. The stud dog owners are experienced but have never had to deal with this before. My bitch is a maiden.
Each day we have stayed at the studs for 2 hours plus. Stud is very interested at first but loses interest after about an hour. Problem is my bitch keeps sitting down every time he mounts her, she is moving her tail to the side and poking her bits out and is not worried about us assisting her but every time we go to hold her up the stud dismounts?
Any advice or tips?
Both dogs have had relevant health tests and are placed well in the ring
Many Thanks

Are both dog and bitch maidens? It's preferable to use a maiden dog on an experienced bitch and vice versa.

As you have had a tie, that could very well be enough..well not having a tie can be enough aswell.
Not surprised he loses interest after an hour of being together trying to mount etc..he is probably tired. If & only if you decide to go again, I would now try day 14 & no more.
As they have been well introduced already after meeting up again for 10 mins, let them get down to business, whilst the dog is keen & the bitch is receptive & if nothing happens in say 15 or so minutes make that it.

Out of interest why do you say day 14 and no more? What if she ovulates late and is ready on say day 19 maybe??
I am using ovulation stick tests but i know these can be controversial.

We have never used any kind of testing for mating & apart from one litter, a good deal of years ago, we have always done 11th to 13th day(some have only been 1 mating) & always had pups. Okay not very scientific but have been involved with dogs for 53 years!!

Everyone is going to have a different story! :-)
I had a bitch that I most definitely wanted a litter from. After explaining to my vet that her seasons were extremely short, he advised testing from the first day that the vulva became swollen. She ovulated on day 4. Another bitch whelped to a mating on day 28.
It's a case of never say never for me!
Hi,
Any good experienced stud will only mate on or as close to the eggs being ripe as he can as this gives him the best chance of getting her in whelp, too early and another male might give her pups, too late and he has no chance either.
I'd bet anything that she ovulated early say day 7, it takes up to 4 days for the eggs to ripen so a mating on day 10 would have been the optimum time pretty much. Day 12 would have been too late for him and a good stud will know if there are fertilised eggs in there. There would be no point, in his mind, in him mating again and wasting his sperm as he could have another bitch appear tomorrow :)
Personally if it were me I wouldn't bother with another go, once should be enough and if she's gone over neither will be interested, but then I can see why you want to try! Sperm can live for a week in the bitch anyway so she's covered until day 15-16.
One of the main signs my boy gives when a girl is almost ready is wee on her, if he did that on day 9 you should be fine ;)
Btw my girl is 51 days today, my boy mated with her on day 4 and 6 of her season, this is her second pregnancy and both times she ovulated really early. She had 8 huge pups last time 2 days early from the first mating.
Good luck x
We have never used any kind of testing for mating & apart from one litter, a good deal of years ago, we have always done 11th to 13th day(some have only been 1 mating) & always had pups.I've never had any testing done either, always just trusted the dog and the bitch, not once had a failed mating -although it's only been 11 years. I have however had pups from matings as early as on day 3 to matings on day 18.

I agree

To continue over too many days means the due date window is going to be several days making it hard to decide if she is overdue and needs vet intervention or not.
From ovulation[eggs released] to them being ripe for the sperm is 48hrs so ideally you do 2 matings, first one 48hrs after ovulation[bitch standing if no testing] and 2nd one 48 hrs later again, this keeps the due date much less, I have only tested one bitch who failed to get pregnant after 4 attempts, she ovulated on day 8[I had been mating her on day 12/14 like my other bitch and mentor suggested] I did finally get her pregnant.
If a tie has taken place then both must have been receptive so I would call it a day now.

Thanks for your reply.
He was very responsive to my girl on all days, he has tried the same every time i have been there. We did have a slip mating yesterday but she sat down just before what would of been the tie and went to assist and he got off. He has had 8 bitches and all have resulted in ties and litters.
Good Luck with your litter x

This is what I was worried about, but if we tried say tomorrow on day 14 that would give a 4 day gap. Is this too long?
I will be scanning her on day 30 from first tie. I also enquired with my vet about an X-ray on day 56 but she said she isn't willing to do it due to risk to the pups. But I wanted to have a heads up on numbers and to make sure a pup wasn't blocking the cervix etc.
We was planning on doing 3 matings 24 hrs apart on days 9, 11 and 13 but obviously it hasn't worked out that way.
Also I have booked her CHV vaccs for days 10 and 53 after mating but as they didn't tie on day 9 as planned will this matter that it will now be on days 9 and 52 or should i rebook?

If it was me and wanted a mating I would get her oestrogen tested via bloods, at least then you'll know for sure if the time's past or if she's not ready yet.

I understood the CHV vac is given within 1 week of first mating and in the last week of pregnancy, the effects are thought to last 60days so getting through the pregnancy and then the puppy rearing.
Keeping the pups very warm for the first 2 weeks also stops the virus getting hold, being chilled for even a short period can put them at risk.
Yep, 'never say never' for me too :) One of my girls will around day 19ish, and she has also mated again day 26 through to 31 :-O She became pregnant to the 2nd set of matings. Her 2nd litter she mated days 24 through days 29 :-) None of this day 14 nonsense for her, but then she's a bit special :-D
My other girl mated day 12 and that was it. After the one mating she said 'enough's enough' and would have ripped any boy's heads off who even came close! She produced a lovely litter of 8 puppies. Dogs are just great, not one the same and most are just too busy to read the books! ;-)

I always prefer to have a bitch mated for as long as she will stand, or the dog looses interest.
