Topic Dog Boards / General / Low white blood cells in Cavalier Kings Charles Spaniel

Hi all

Wondering if anyone has any experiance with Low white cells and low protein count

Our Cavalier Kings Charles spaniel is back in hospital. He is 5 years old

He had stomach ulcers last year and his stomach lining has thinned out.

This time - He was vomitting and passed dry and fresh blood, stopped eating and drinking excess amouts of water so the vet kept him in the hospital.

This is what we have been told

Vet says - Giz has stopped vomiting but is now presenting frequent bloody diarrhea which is consistent with bleeding from his guts or stomach. His blood count and smear test indicate a severe level of pancreatitis and so does his platelets count. His protein level remains significantly low but has picked up since yesterday with the drip however his white blood cells are very low and red cells high which is again consistent with dehydration and internal bleeding. However we are investigating any secondary disease contributing to the platelets count. He will be kept in for another 24 hours and and xray and ultra sound will be performed tomorrow

Does anyone have any advice, or experiance with this sort of thing??

Lots of info here.....
http://www.cavalierhealth.org/pancreatitis.htm

Bear in mind that automated blood cell counters give a false reading for Cavaliers as they have large platelets.I would ask for a manual count and then review the results.

This info is also on that site ^^
