Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Herpes Vaccine.

So it has come to that time of year again where we try and mate our bitch, and hopefully this time get a litter.

She is fully health tested, and was blood tested lat time for optimum date, but being over xmas the last test was on the 21st dec and we were given a predicted date. This mating proved fruitless

I am planning on having her swabbed to see if there are any nasties lying in wait that would kill off sperm and am considering having the herpes vacs done as well as a course of antibiotics as a just in case.

The stud is well proven and has 2 litters due any day.

Can I have some opinions on the use of this vaccine. If anybody has had success with a mating after using this?

Thanks

We used it last time, mainly because my bitch was a maiden and the dog we used has sired a number of litters. She had the first jab a couple of days after the second mating, then the second jab about 10 days before her due date. We had no problems at all with either the whelping or puppies, nor did we lose any. Whether that had anything to do with the CHV or not I don't know, but I do know we would be using next time we have a litter

Have used it on 2 bitches in the past, 1 reabsorbed 2 litters sired by an 12 yr old but vet suspected CHV in the area as we weren't alone in our losses this way, the other bitch appeared to miss twice.  Both girls went on to have 2 normal sized healthy litters with no problems after the vaccines during whelp.

I personally wouldn't have a litter without it now, just in case!
It is quite an expensive vaccine, my vets charged me £58 per vaccine, we are yet to get the 2nd but compared to the heartbreak of losing puppies it is nothing.
My girl had hers 2 days after mating and will be getting the other in the next weeks or so as she is just over 6 weeks pregnant.

Good luck :-)

Hi Diddles I had my bitch swabbed (as per stud dog owners request) and my bitch had the CHV vaccine as for the past few litters I was getting dead pups or dying at a couple of days old so wanted to cover every eventuality.

Larry at Idexx told me that from the swab result there was only bacteria that would've been there naturally and it wouldnt kill sperm so no need to give AB's.  Again I had one dead pup born and another smaller pup die after 2 days. The other 5 pups thrived but this one didn't gain weight and I think maybe something else was going on. I just put it down to bad luck and will continue to get the CHV vaccine done next time.

We have always used it and always will in the future. We just let our Vet know that we need it and it's ordered, as others have said it's given a few days after mating and again about 10 days before whelping date. Thankfully we've never had fading puppies but not prepared to take the risk. Our girls are also given 5 days of ABs prior to mating.

Only just seen your post, I used the vaccine on my bitch as it was my first time doing this and the owner of the stud dog, who is also a breeder recommended it.  Had no problems with whelping or anything else, 6 healthy puppies all survived, I am in contact with all of them who have no problems.  I would definately use it again.

My vet is away until Monday - my bitch was mated Sunday Monday - is a week OK to leave it for the CHV vaccination ?
- By Hazenaide [gb] Date 28.08.13 19:54 UTC
Not sure I think it is up to 7 days. It is to do with the period I assume when a live vaccine should not be given.

Vaccine can be given 7-10 days after mating :)

Hmm - ok, I just called another surgery and booked in for tomorrow - but that will be 5 days from first mating - maybe I should cancel that and get my own vet to do it when he returns Monday?

That will be just fine :) It can even be give before mating as season starts or up to max of 7- 10 days post mating. 5 days post mating is perfectly ok. My girl had hers today at 5 days post mating

we had the vaccine done after a week after mating, and she is due her 2nd one next friday......hooray for us because we have a confirmed pregnancy and she will be due about 20th Sept, scan confirmed at least 3 but being a deep chested breed was told they can carry them quite high up in a 1st litter so to expect maybe more...third time lucky.

This time we did 5 days of ABs
swabbed on day 9
a week with the stud
CHV vacs

would do the same again next time.

needless to say after nearly 2 years of trying we are over the moon.

Oh well done you !!!

I'm very nervous this time, she had a urine infection a week or so before so was on anti biotics for a week, then the CHV.

She is slightly lethargic today, the day after the vaccination- not sure f it's that, or something I should worry about. She has a bit of discharge still, and all te dogs are still 'cleaning' her back end.
