Iv seen a show catalogue today with (AP1) at the end of the dogs name, what does that stand for?

It shouldn't really have been included as part of the dog's name, as it's on the registration document only to say which issue of the breed records supplement the dog appeared in.
In the case of AP1, it means the dog was registered in quarter 1 of 2012.

There was one in my breed at Blackpool that said AP4 after it.  Never seen it before, wonder why they were included?  Thanks for clarifying :-)

Because the Kennel club ruling is that the name should appear on entry forms exactly as it is on the registraion certificate.

The letters do appear as part of the dogs name, where it says Regsitered name.

The full reg number is next to a side heading for Regsitration number.

So I assume a novice or overseas person would do as the rules instruct and put the letters, perhaps strictly speaking we should all be doing so???
