Hi all, just wondered after reading an earlier post about weaning, do most mix puppy milk with kibble to make it soft in the first weeks of weaning or do some just add water? Or is it just the last feed of the day with milk to fill them up?

Dry puppy complete I always mix with warm water (not hot) and leave to soak, the dam is always allowed to come and go as much as she likes and warm milk is put down morning and evening, along with a fresh bowl of water changed throughout the day. :-)

If your puppies are still being fed by mum then they are getting enough milk, there is no need to give milky feeds.
It isnow your duty to get the puppies onto good quality solid feeds before they leave home. Milky feeds are not necesarry, by the age of 8 weeks or whenever they leave home they should be completely independant of mums milk and no other should need to be given!

Thanks, I have only ever added water to puppy complete and I don't give scrambled eggs etc as I feel that they get everything from the complete food and mums milk, also their digestive systems are so delicate in the early weeks I don't want to add extras. So far it must've worked as I haven't had any runny poos for all 3 litters. I asked the question earlier because I've read posts on here that talk about adding milk to the complete and I thought I might not be doing the best for the babies. I haven't given milk on its own either, should I be doing this for the last top up before bed? Thanks again

The only milk I've ever felt necessary has been for the bitch, not the pups.  I feel that, with all the goodness I plough into mum, the pups get through her milk.  Sometimes my breed have been a bit late coming into milk, but not drinking enough water.  As they need fluid to help milk production I give mum diluted goats milk for a while after whelping.  The warm water added to goats milk is ideal.  Not many bitches would refuse it.
