Having my  Bitch speyed next week   at 2 and half. The vet keeps dogs in overnight for obs and as I nearly lost a bitch some years ago, this sounds great but part of me is worried she will be stressed and would be better at home with me......So would you leave a bitch overnight at vets? I know its a personal choice but I can't make my mind up !

Not for a routine spay.

No, I never have for a spay. I don't see why it would be necessary. If your bitch could be spayed in the morning there should be plenty of time for her to be observed while she recovers from the anaesthetic, then you could collect her late afternoon.

I wonder how closely supervised this overnight stay would be. If it just means one of the vet nurses sleeping on the premises and making periodic observations, you could do that if they told you what to look out for. The info sheet given out at the time of collection should tell you what to expect.

I'd be asking some questions if she was mine.

I've always had my dogs back after a spay. The only time one of mine stayed overnight at the vets was when she had her crusciate ligament repaired. The vet didn't keep an eye on her the entire night as he told me he found she had very nearly taken off all the bandaging on her leg and was sleeping very comfortably in all the bits.

Many vets don't have staff on premises overnight, someone checks periodically.

This vets do have staff on overnight but that dosn't mean they will be with her constantly. I'm going to go elsewhere, it sounded great at first but I think I'd rather she was home with me ....thanks for confirming my thoughts :)

Just want to reiterate what others have said. Unless there is a problem there is no need for her to be kept in.

No, I also would not leave a bitch after a spay, never needed to ever, it should be a straight forward operation and most dogs walk out of the vets once fully awake. Unless a dog is out sparko most dogs can't wait to be home they don't understand why they are there,

Also as pointed out many vets try to get an over-night stay, I got talked into one once and then found out they did not have night staff so animals are left completely alone anyway, what good is that? The argument that they are more likely to get a peaceful nights sleep and rest doesn't wash with me, I'd rather be there, IMO it causes more stress and worry for a dog. If your vet does stay all night that is good but not sure why he needs observation for a spay when they are one of the most common ops around.

I just sleep downstairs with any dogs now who have had an op and they sleep like babies in their own home with their loving owner, also if the worst happens and something goes wrong, you are there to call an emergency vet as you are giving one to one and may even spot something quicker than an overnight stay even would, and if something goes bad I'd rather have my dog in my arms than not be there at all.

Make your own decision on this........ but that is the way I feel about it.

I've never even heard of dogs being kept in after neutering, I certainly wouldn't be doing it. Putting my Wurzle Gummage suspicious head on, I wonder if its not just a way of getting more money, as I see no reason to do it if all has gone well.

Only ever heard of it in an emergency case of Pyometra when things were touch and go, but never in a healthy bitch being spayed.

Never had a girl  stay overnight at vets following spay. Even Meggie ,who was spayed as an emergency due to pyometra . She was operated on in the morning and observed in the recovery area for a few hours and then came home to a hero's welcome and lots of TLC in the evening.

No i wouldn't leave my girls in the vet overnight after a spay...i have never heard of vets doing this.
I can understand if there were post op. problems but its usually a pretty straightforward/routine op.

No, I would bring her home and give her peace and quiet. I sleep with my girls after they are spayed for 4 or 5 days to make sure they don't worry the stitches.I know you can use a collar but they look so uncomfortable.

Thanks for the replies. Brought her home and she was fine, well apart from the false pregnancy, nesting and collecting my cuddly toys and having milk...over that now but she is now humping everything in sight...she didn't before......vets says to keep an eye on her and it should pass................honestly lol
- By Roxylola [gb] Date 14.06.13 13:18 UTC
Bless her.  Both my speyed dogs hump my entire girl and sometimes each other.  I have never seen my entire girl hump anything (except maybe a fluffy when she was a tiny pup)
