I have just called my vets and they charge for a passport and rabies jab a combines £110!!!

I was hoping to barter with them on this, so if any of you in the SE could post what your vets charge without microchip(as they are chipped), so rabies and passport cost it would help, and the area you are in.

I'm NOT paying that silly price!!!

I have recently posted on this very subject and was just about to update when I saw your post. Friends are coming over this year to us  They were quoted £150 for one dog and as they have two that was becoming very expensive. They went to their sister's vet and got both dogs done for £94. However as I have someone coming over that has a puppy from me I emailed them and told them to shop around. They got her done for £100, £50 for the jab and £50 for the passport. Her own Vet wanted to charge £230. Disgraceful. I would most definitely suggest shopping around.

No, there is no issue with the normal vaccinations. The rabies is a vaccinations given every three years (to comply with the passport). Do look around though as I cannot see why there can be so much difference, especially with the price of the blue passport, after all they must have to get them from the same source so why should some Vets charge so much. As for the paperwork it really is only as much writing as in a normal vaccination card and they don't even charge for them, or if they do it is in the price of the booster.

Any vet can sign a vaccination card, but not all vets can authorise passports. Also passports need to be bought in from a central source and are individually numbered whereas vax cards are sometimes given free by vaccine manufacturers or are identical blanks which the vet can get printed in their thousands at low cost.

But I presume that they all cost the same amount if as you say they are from a central source, so why the massive difference in what Vets are charging for them? One friend was quoted £88 (just for the passport) and then got it from another Vet for £18, another has just paid £50 and goodness knows how much the Vet was charging when the total would have been £230.

I imagine the quoted £230 was when the titre test was needed; possibly they haven't updated their prices accordingly. Was the quote directly from the vet or from a nurse or receptionist?

Have emailed them to ask that question. It still however leaves the other person who did speak to his Vet and was told £88 and yet got it done at his sister's Vet for £18

They used to charge £50 plus vat (so £60) for the actual passport here, that was in 2010.  Charged £58 for the pre flight health certification after that.

Assuming that the dog has already been chipped I would expect a rabies jab and a passport to be about £80 - £90.

She has now come back to me. She spoke to several surgeries and so spoke to some receptionists and some Vets. One Vet that phoned her back wanted £230. Another actually told her that she needed two rabies vaccinations AND the blood test so no wonder his price was up. Don't they know DEFRA guidelines. I would have thought that as it was splashed in the newspapers and on television before 2012 and on January 1st 2012 it would have been hard to miss.

That was £90 for two i.e. £45 a dog. But as I said earlier, a friend has just got both his dogs done for approximately £94 in total. I find it unbelievable that are such variances. I understand some surgeries have higher overheads but as in one case £230 as opposed to £47, can't believe the overheads are THAT vast.

Well if our local ones can charge nearly £70 merely to sign a health certificate that I had already obtained and completed, and nearly £60 2 1/2 years ago just to complete the health statement in the existing Pet passport, it does not surprise me at all.

Just returned from my lovely vets to get Paddy's passport done. I was only charged £40 which I think is more than reasonable in relation to what others on this forum have been charged. I had the rabies vaccination done ages ago but don't remember how much I paid -around £30 perhaps.
The same practice only charged £668 for an emergency caesarian section on Easter Saturday afternoon. Six lovely healthy puppies - there were 7 but one had got stuck in an awkward position and didn't make it - and mum pleased as punch with them -didn't seem to have any discomfort at all.

Blimey Jan, that is what I would expect to pay in "office hours" at my practice!

Our vet charges £18 for signing health certificate for fitness to travel, nothing for pet passport and £32 for rabies. We send a lot abroad and he states he enjoys doing the paperwork!,
