Topic Dog Boards / General / A different breed?

I am sure its been done before on the forum - however if you changed your breed due to health age life style home etc what breed would you change to and why?
- By Brainless [gb] Date 16.04.13 21:34 UTC
Wouldn't change, but might have to reduce the number of dogs kept.

I've changed from borzois to silken windhounds (and I also have always had border collies and still do).

I love borzois and had wanted one since I was a small girl. I've owned 15 over the last 25 years. They're not always the easiest breed to walk in public parks, most of mine had one or two 'incidents' involving chasing other dogs even though no malice was intended. The worst was my 1st champion who had a lovely temperament but couldn't resist anything that ran, he once chased a dog out the park, along an A road, round a roundabout and back along the A road!

My last borzoi made me realise that they are not ideal dogs for the lifestyle I lead. I spend a lot of time walking in popular dog walking areas, I like to explore new places and I like the sociable aspect of dog walking and this is sometimes quite stressful with a large sighthound with a strong prey drive.

I decided on a Silken Windhound after seeing a photo of one about 14 years ago, it took me 10 years to get one. They are like my beloved borzois in look and temperament but not as sharp, more trainable and a much easier to handle size :-) I have 2 now and another puppy booked for next year, they are definitely a breed I will be able to continue to own right into my dotage :-)

I think owners of Pharaoh and Ibizan hounds may find the same with the Cirneco Del Etna.  I really like them, and your silkens.
- By apachearrow [gb] Date 17.04.13 09:17 UTC
I met a Cirneco Dell Etna at Crufts and really liked her...she was stunning and had a fab temperment. Think one might be on my wish list!! :D I dont think I would change breeds (border collies & labradors) but when I decide to finish working in obedience I would probably take on an older one :) that way I get to live with the breed I love, an older dog gets a loving home and hopefully we would suit each other on the exercise front :D

have decided that I will need to downsize dog size that is in the future for all sorts of reasons. My choice is between pomeranian, long haired chihuahua, or papillion
- By pugnut [gb] Date 18.04.13 08:51 UTC
I will always have pugs, I'll be like Ethel from Eastenders lol :-D
- By PDAE [gb] Date 18.04.13 12:08 UTC
I'll always have my Spanish will just have to get an electric chair or something if I can't run around with them later on in life lol.

I have owned several different breeds over the years.  I have had a major breed but changed because of lifestyle.  Couldn't be walking dog aggressive breed with kids at the park!  I'm glad I came out the breed as I am enjoying a new type of dog ownership, Sociable!lol

I have a list of breeds that I would like to own that I made when I was 11 yrs old from an all breeds book my grandfather bought me.  Don't get me wrong, LOTS of breeds have been discounted due to various reasons but I would still love to own lots of different breeds.  In fact, my favourite breed ever, I have not owned yet but have promised myself will be my next breed as I will need to get a move on or else I will be too old for such a 'hard' breed.

Why limit yourself to just one breed if you are not owning a dog for breeding?
By that I mean, I have a breed that I work quite hard in to build a reputation for my girls and I will take a litter if I want a pup but other than that, I don't breed.  I also own other breeds that I don't breed from as they are my 'pets'.  I don't do anything with them and will never breed them/show them/work them.  Why not own different breeds that take my fancy?  I like to try something different.  I also like to explore other breeds traits.  I love learning! :)

If I ever reach the stage where I can't have my favourites - dobes and malinois (not that I've managed to get the latter yet!) - then I'll downsize to Manchester terriers and min pins.

But hopefully I'll always be able to have my dobes at least, and I'm hoping one day to be in a good place to have an anatolian as well :-)

Have already changed - from American Cockers to  Pugs, only 1 Yankee left now after 23 years of them.  Arthritic wrists won't let me do the grooming anymore.
- By japmum [gb] Date 20.04.13 20:43 UTC
Will always stick to cavaliers and chins but must admit I have for some years now thought about adding a papillon for agility.

I used to own a Golden Retriever a beautiful breed but to much grooming for me because she was heavy coated, so I might consider a Lab retriever next.

I've had GSD's for more yrs than I've had children and my eldest lad is 38 now but I won't have another. I have always had long coats and it's hard work keeping them well groomed. Kills my back and my knees and makes my wrists hurt (I'm getting old and creaky lol) I do like hounds and I know rescue are always looking for homes for ex racing Greyhounds.

Me to,have had GSD's for 45 years oldest son is 41,Latest boy (GSD that is ) is 2 years old now so think he will be my last youngster.OH wont even think of another breed,I bought him our first for his 21st birthday present !!! His mum bought him a wrist watch. on the day we lost our first boy the watch stopped working ,never went again . I am thinking of a toy breed if I out live my now boy ,something like a chihuahua, though would probably trip over a small one .

> ,something like a chihuahua, though would probably trip over a small one .

That's the thing you see, I am not a small dog person so I could not take to a small breed. I like "big" dogs which is why I'm thinking retired Greyhound. They are a "big" dog but very gentle and easy maintenance! I love Borzoi but I know that they can be a handful. Old age is a pain in the a***e lol
- By Jodi Date 21.04.13 07:21 UTC
I think I would consider a retired Greyhound too, but getting another Golden which if she lasts as long as the last dog, we could be into our eighties!
Met a lady yesterday with a sixteen week old English Toy Terrier. Lovely, smart looking dog very similar to the Min Pin, but, according to the owner, not as feisty. Apparently it's on the KC rarity list.

Now that I'm older I might consider a small breed, a toy poodle maybe.
- By furriefriends Date 23.04.13 08:30 UTC
I have always been a big/bigger breed person until I lived with our Mia ( pomxchi) now I am a convert before her ( sorry small breed people) I wouldnt have given them house room.
How wrong I was small yes but full of personality, easy to take around , everyone loves her and as for tripping over her I fall over thebig ones more often than her. She has a 6th sense about getting out the way.
Her vices ? too noisy , something I should have worked on had I realised quicker and hard to house train

We have had Great Danes for 40 years. Our first dog was a Borzoi. We had a delightful sheepdog with one of the GD. I will not get a giant breed again as they are a bit strong for me now. I might consider an older Border Collie or I am seriously attracted to Vallhunds. It would have to be cat friendly as we have been catless for some years due to the latest GD being predatory to small furries. We miss the cats. I used to breed them many years ago.

Me too :) I won't be in a position to have one for a few years probably so haven't done any serious research yet :)

Considered one if my daughter and son had been seriously into Junior handling, but son wasn't and daughter prefered breed handling, didn't like the older JH classes.
