Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Autarky adult for 7 1/2 month GSD?
- By gson [gb] Date 02.04.13 17:18 UTC
Hi All
Just looking for a bit of advice please. Loki has been on CSJ little champ. Was wondering if it is ok to swap him onto an adult food now? He weighs about 34kg-dad and grandps both big boys at 45kg-ish. I feed my 4 year old gsd bitch(34kg) Autarky and she gets 2/3rds of a cup twice a day and is doing really well on it. Great coat, nice and lean, loads of energy and her digestive system is healthy(if you catch my drift!). Not sure if I'm too soon to switch? If it's ok to switch the feeding guide is no help. Should I give him the amount for his expected weight or his actual weight or will he need more while he is still growing?
Thanks!

I'd feed him the puppy version perhaps mixed half and half with the adult, (at 22% protein I woudl think it a bit low for a pup) but at 27% protein I wouldn't consider the Puppy too high for a GSD pup of that age.

Personally I would stay on puppy until 12 months as there will still be a lot of growing/filling out to do. I mainly feed raw these days but my Malinois pup who is 8 months gets one meal of Little Champ and one of meat, and I will keep her on LC until at least a year. She's nowhere near finished growing. :)

Thanks Brainless and Goldmali. I kind of felt it might be too soon but also was worried that there was a chance that he might be getting too rich a diet. I worry with my big dogs about how fast they bulk up in case of too much strain on joints etc. I feed my wee beardie raw(resolved squitty tum issues) and he loves it so using the pup/adult half n half mixed or feeding raw for one meal are both easy for us. I think as I probably want to feed the shepherds the same food eventually I will try the half n half and see how we go until he's a year or so. Good to be able to run it by someone. Vet was hopeless- he knew nothing at all about raw feeding. He expressed concern about "Bugs" in unprocessed food. But then he he also talks about "jobbies"! :( Told me he fed his dog James Wellbeloved topped with a bit of Chappie - no big surprise as these are what he had on display! Not insulting either food - just laughing at the blatant commercially biased advice!Maybe time for a new vet??

Just wondering what you feel the pup gets from the processed food that he doesn't get from Raw? I feed all my dogs on raw and the pup that is staying here will be fed 100% raw too.

Not everyone wants or is able to adopt Raw feeding.

no but as goldmali says she feeds mainly raw I was wondering why she added the commercial food. i am a bit concerned that by feeding only raw I am missing something from my puppies diet and might be better adding some kibble to it.

Size. Last time I had a litter, I had to keep two pups, and my friend had two. I then had a third back aged 14 months, so there are 5 from that litter that I know really well and live with or meet on a regular basis. 3 were reared on commercial complete foods, the two that stayed with me raw only. And my two raw fed ones are considerably smaller than the other 3. Both also smaller than both parents. (They are 2 years 6 months now so stopped growing.) Hence hubby and I said next time we have a pup we will feed 50/50 to see if it makes a difference.
