I'm considering raw feeding the kittens once they are fully grown, at the moment they are getting some raw mince ( turkey and lamb ) alongside their commercial kitten food, both are loving it. I used to feed the dogs raw until Daisy went off it, but I'm worried about getting the taurine level right, and for some reason I see cats as being a bit more specialist than dogs.
Are there any meat suppliers out there that specialise in raw cat food ?, any other info or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cats seem to do very well on 50/50 raw and kibble, if you didn't want to go 100% (or have trouble switching them over), my last cat was 50/50 as it wasn't easy to find a way of getting enough bone into her diet.

She wasn't keen on the Prize Choice minces I used for my dog - or rather she was picky about them and would only eat one variety - so she also had mince from the butcher or supermarket, diced chicken, pork or turkey, kidney and especially loved diced lamb's heart. (I was lucky to have a local butcher who would sell me cat-sized portion amounts of various meats). She also had canned fish now & again. I can't remember if she liked raw eggs but some cats do. She would have one raw meal a day and a small bowl of kibble (usually JWB or Royal Canin) always available to free-feed from as she had outdoor access and got plenty of exercise.

I once bought a dressed wood-pigeon from a game stall at a farmer's market, I took off the breasts for her, and she also had the wings and legs (looked like doll-sized turkey drumsticks!) - that was probably the only time she actually ate the bone as well - and my dog got the carcass. She would also get some raw pheasant if I was lucky enough to get one.

That's not a bad idea Sue, I would even buy meat from the supermarket, it's a damned sight cheaper than some of these premium wet cat foods.
I read somewhere that you shouldn't feed cats pork, any idea if that's true ?

Pork in some countries carries a parasite, but not in the UK. I've often read the same re dogs, but mine have pork regularly. It can be fatty but nowadays most pork is very lean.

Prize Choice/Natures Menu is trialling a complete raw food for cats -they keep promising it will be available soon so I hope it will. I've fed all mine for about a year now on nothing but food from them. I do play safe and add taurine a couple of times a week -doesn't have to be exact amounts as you cannot overdose, and I don't buy the super expensive taurine sold for cats, I buy it for humans, 1 kg for about £20 lasts me several months for all my lot. My cats get chicken, lamb, beef (mix it with the chicken -beef alone upset their stomachs, too much chicken caused constipation, mixing works brilliantly) and the chicken with liver blocks. It's been a year full of trial and error. I fed rabbit for a while, they went off it completely after a couple of months. Tried heart chunks, turkey necks -some ate it, some did not. Same with chicken wings and chicken carcasses, some eat it, some do not. We do persevere for the sake of their teeth. All the minces were no problem at all, it was just a question of waiting them out -those that refused initially came round when they had no choice.  I have halved my food bill this way and the cats are looking a lot better for it.

My 16yr old cat has recently gone 'raw' not through my doing but by her choice.

I changed my 5 dogs to raw over 6 months ago and the cat took it upon herself to 'pinch' their food, she's a tiny cat but can easily push a dog out of it's food bowl.

She now eats a mixture of minced chicken carcass, odd bits of minced beef, the odd chunk of lamb and her kibble, if I offer her a cat pouch of meat it's 'no thank-you I don't want that rubbish'.

She's velvety sleek and happy and still catching mice!!

I've found that they do eat mince easily enough, but they gave up when I gave them some raw chicken chunks, although they were keen to start with.
Thanks for the info I'll fiddle about and see what they like, even if I don't go completely raw, I'll be giving them meat instead of tinned wet.

My cat is another who helps himself to the dogs.  He pushes the soppy shepherd out the way particularly for the chicken backs and loves the salmon minces too.  I still give him cat complete too.  He brought home a headless(don't ask) mouse to try and swap our springer once.  She ate the mouse and her dinner without giving him a sniff.  He was not impressed but now knows to not go near her bowl.  They soon learn who the pushover is!!lol

Natural instinct have done a raw cats food for a while, comes in smaller tubs and they will probably send a sample.

Trouble with Natural Instinct (sadly!) is they cost FAR more than canned food, whereas the minces end up being a saving.
