I have only known this to happen in conjuction with a spay but I suppose it could be done by hysterotomy. I don't know if it can be done medically. As to up to what stage I suppose that would be up to the individual vet I am sure there is no law covering it after all some litters are culled at birth where numbers are needed to be reduced due to lack of suitable homes.

Spay is the lay persons term for ovariohysterectomy (sp?). The termination occurs as a consequence of removing the organ in which the pups are developing. I remember reading somewhere that it can be done in the first two thirds of the gestation period.

A hysterotomy is really the same as a ceasarian section so I suppose they might be willing to do that right up to term as it would be without the risk of removing the uterus.

Isabel a Hysterectomy IS the removal of the uterus!! A cesarean is the removal of the puppies from the uterus at term.

And a hysterotomy is the opening up of the uterus and resuturing :)

Sorry I thought it was a typo, never heard a C section called that before. Typical medical terminology. A bit like Hypothermia, Hyperthermia, and Hypothyroidism, and Hyperthyroidism I assume :D

Sorry too :), I thought your first message was to explain this more to Tina, I didn't realise you had not heard of the term, it's not generally used except in the case of the removal of an unviable foetus. So you see what I mean about it might be judged as reasonably safe to do in the later stages of pregnancy, I'm only guessing though.
