I made a post earlier in January about my pups recessed lady bits. I was discussing with the vets and as expected was advised to leave her one maybe two seasons before spaying. Also met ironed was the propensity for urine infections. I was wondering the. (But didn't ask at the time) could she be given cranberry supplements to help prevent them? Do they make them for dogs?

Cheers
J

All cranberry supplements do is neutralise the acidity of the urine and stop it burning when being passed, if urine is being trapped and then infected they won't help.

Making sure the dog drinks enough so the urine doesn't become concentrated is all you can do for her and hope as she has more seasons the vulva "pops" more and stays out as spaying is not going to improve things.

Hi, I give my girls a cranberry tablet every day, i put it in a bit of peanut butter and they gobble it down. One of them used to get cystitis all the time and this seems to have put a stop to it, touchwood!
I get them from Asda, three pots for £10.00 they are for humans. They haven't done mine any harm and they have been taking them for about three years now.

Would advise speaking to your vet before giving cranberry product particularly if your breed is one that could suffer from a bleeding problem.

Well its not done mine any harm and the vet will probs try and sell you something that costs loads like they do.

as a matter of interest NOve what is the connection between cranberry and bleeding> Not something I have come across. Is this just dogs or humans too ?

Well I know it applies to humans so I think it wise to check when giving it to dogs unless it has been suggested by your vet who knows your animal. There are a large number of breeds that may have individuals that suffer from a bleeding problem so I would never take the risk.

It is something I can't have along with Grapefruit. It has a similar effect to Warfarin the drug used in rat poison and also used to prevent clotting of the blood.
