Topic Dog Boards / General / Poor coverage of Crufts on TV
- By snowflake [gb] Date 03.03.13 19:59 UTC
Hi

I was disappointed to see that there is only 30 minutes a day of Crufts highlights.  I seem to remember last year that one could click on a link on line to watch it - is that still the case this year does anyone know and if so does anyone have the link?  Given that so many are dog lovers and interested in all things canine it is really surprising that there is so little coverage of the show.

Thanks

Snowflake

Where does it say that there are 30 minutes a day of highlights?

Wednesday 6th - pre-Crufts program "Show Dogs: The Road to Crufts" (1 hour on More4)
Thursday 7th - 2.5 hours on More4
Friday 8th - 2.5 hours on More4
Saturday 9th - 2.5 hours on More4
Sunday 10th - 2.5 hours on Channel 4

Plus live footage from the arena at http://www.youtube.com/user/OfficialCrufts

Hurrayyy!!

You'd think after all these years of going (without a dog!) I wouldn't get so excited about it, but I love it!!
- By MsTemeraire Date 03.03.13 21:51 UTC
Will be glued to it on live streaming as usual - last year my mother watched as well, she loved the flyball!
And then the Real Thing on Sunday, first visit for me for over 20 years. Yaay!
- By Celli [gb] Date 03.03.13 22:25 UTC
Blimey, that was a bit of a temporary " eek !" moment, only half an hour !, unthinkable !, plus it's the only time I can get my own back on the OH for the endless F1 racing.

> endless F1 racing.

I get that too with the Aged Parent. Apparently I was taken to see the British Grand Prix when I was about 5. I can remember a lot of tall peoples legs and mud. Later told I saw Jackie Stewart but it didn't mean much, and still don't see the attraction.

It drives ( ho ho ) me nuts, round and round and round they go, there's no end to it once the season starts, and the noise !, ugh.
- By springfever [gb] Date 04.03.13 11:53 UTC
Its sheer bliss for me - Crufts on the telly this week (not going this year) & the following weekend, the return of F1! My family will not get any sense out of me for a couple of weeks.
- By tatty-ead [gb] Date 04.03.13 12:43 UTC
Ditto and don't forget the weeks F1 is't on there is usually Moto GP to watch

Loved it.
Wish there were more programmes like this, that portray exhibitors as fairly average people, and also the dogs being dogs, when not in the ring!

Whoops - that was about the programme "The road To Crufts" which was on More 4 at 9pm tonight. Well worth seeing on catchup if you can.

Funny how different people perceive things, I liked it, but some folk on facebook thought it portrayed dog people as weirdos.

Maybe these people are more like the people I met than the plummy speaking ladies in tweeds, or the flat cap brigade often portrayed.

Well there was the guy with the facial decoration, but the rest looked fairly normal to me! Did they think the poodle lady getting tearful as she remembered her Crufts BIS winner was weird? or the guy who welled up when talking about the first dog he lost? Perfectly normal! :)

I had my doubts at the opening scene...lol but it panned out well. And I loved the parti-poodle the poodle lady has now.

I guess Barabara Woodhouse still hasn't slipped from the collective memory!

The behaviour of some of those on that programme were quite simply odd! Nothing wrong with being emotional over loosing a pet it's the rest of it which was questionable. To the non showing world they must think we are all barking.. Sorry but I don't know anyone who shows who is like these people, the only show person who was an absolute credit was the young junior handler...
It also paid no reference to Crufts either.

None of my friends thought they had chosen the correct people to interview.

It started well then lost the plot somehow. I assumed it would be mating, birth, pick a puppy, show the puppy, qualify for Crufts! Didn't think it was bad really. Loved the parti Poodle, still want one! :) Thought the JH boy was excellent.

i loved the parti poodle too, i really think they where trying to show everday ppl which we all are but yesi agree some strange ones in that lol

I have just watched it and found it a bit boring as it was more a documentary on the lives of a few people rather than focus on the end to end journey on how to succeed/ take part in showing or agility.

I thought the junior handler was taking part rather than enjoying it as he didn't to me really show enthusiasm or gave the dog encouragement and seemed quite flat.

I did however like the chap with the piercings as he came across very well. I did  pick up on his older women comment and how some of them couldn't look him in the face which is understandable as some of his piercings were quite extreme but did to me put over a message that your face had to fit to be accepted but he obviously didn't care what they thought !

I think as well it would have been good to include some people that did show as well as work tor take part in trials with their dogs as that would have been a good insight into that it is not just a 'beauty show' hobby.

I thought it portrayed us as weirdos I must say. And the mating at the beginning seemed totally unnecessary and wasn't mentioned again, just shock value to make the average viewer think we are nutters that watch dogs mating! The mother and boy were ok and the lady doing agility, and the poodle lady, but the others seemed a bit odd. But then we are a bit odd I suppose!
- By PDAE [gb] Date 07.03.13 09:55 UTC
I thought it was awful and do not feel that it portrayed us well at all !  I'm not plummy, I'm an average person as are most of my friends in the show world and I don't think any are like most of the people shown on there.
- By Roxylola [gb] Date 07.03.13 10:31 UTC
As a non shower I liked it, I missed the very beginning but I know what that looks like!

I thought the people were real enough, the young lad seemed very shut down emotionally but nice and obviously adored his dog.

Not sure what to make of the people with the bull terriers, not my cup of tea really but they did not seem to do much training with them and as such they did not show well.

Loved the lady with the spitz, I could have watched an hour with her and the family along with an hour of the poodle lady.

The programme itself seemed quite patchy, not very well put together so a bit hard to watch and enjoy really.  Too many little threads, would have worked better as a series (even just 10 minute long episodes) each episode focusing on one of the story lines.  Especially as the agility seemed almost an after thought.  Would have been good to see more trials, flyball etc all the other stuff that goes on there.

I'm afraid I too thought the 'Road to Crufts' programme was uncomfortable viewing at times and this was purely down to the very obvious agenda the Production team had!.... To be fair 'Ricky Gervais' gave it to them on a plate!
But of all the splendid and amazing Characters we all know and love on the Circuit I wish they'd chosen some better 'stories' ~ The wonderful Motorbike lady and lovely JW boy saved it for me.

I thought it was odd too and nothing at all that I expected from the title so I was disappointed. As someone already said, it was more about people's lives rather than about the steps to get to Crufts. I loved the fact that Mr Piercing had decided to help his disabled Mum so that she could carry on enjoying shows etc. I think a better format would have been to follow the journey from Puppy to Ringcraft to shows and the bits in between and the lead up to Crufts and preparation. That would certainly have fitted the title better and was more what I was expecting. :(
I think they tried to portray the people as being a bit whacky :(

Maybe after PDE 1&2 it is hard to get folk to take part in such programmes, there must be more interesting folk out there, I have been watching Dog World on Youtube and could listen to those tales for hours.
