I think learning the body language and facial expressions that encourage the reaction we want in our pooch is valuable for bonding, understanding each other and it's a big help in Rally-O. Not to mention it's awfully satisfying to have your dog run to you when as far as any observers can tell, you haven't done anything. :)
There is a drawback. When we are practising recall from a stay for obedience I have to make sure I don't smile at him. If I do, he might come to me when I don't want him to.
