Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / yellowy poos in 9 day olds
- By kennel maiden [gb] Date 21.02.13 12:43 UTC
I've got a nice litter of medium-sized pups, that are all bonny and putting on weight very well.  But today, 9 days, I have noticed a runny/moussey poo that was yellow and smelly on the vet bed.  It also looks like it has got 'grain's' in it (could that be worm eggs?).  The pups seem very happy and contented, but I am concerned this could be worms causing this poo.

What is the earliest age I could worm them?  Normally I have waited until 2.5 weeks, and the Panacur wormer says 2 weeks, but that is still nearly a week away, and if this is a sign of worms I don't really want to leave them like it.

Any thoughts/advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

I worm my small breed at 2 weeks old with Panacur 10%, was the dam wormed daily from day 40 with the same?

Could the dam have eaten something that has upset the pups.

Thanks Rhodach

No, I must admit I don't like doing that Day 40 protocol.  I just feel a bit strange about putting chemicals into the bitch while she is pregnant.  I know some do it and swear by it, and others don't....... so, that is why I am aware it could be worms.  Likewise, I guess it could be rich food and plenty of milk.

I do intend to worm at 2 weeks to be sure, but just wondered if it was safe to do it a couple of days earlier?  If there are worms, I don't want them to affect the pups (although as I say they are hugely healthy and strong at the moment).

My mentor took in a pup to hand rear after the dam had killed/attacked all her pups post c/section because her owner despite being told didn't keep an eye on her whilst still drowsy post op as they were entertaining visitors Xmas Eve, this pup became very pot bellied at Day 9 and off her food so she wormed early and was horrified to see what this poor pup passed, her dam had never been wormed during pregnancy, she was quite deflated and very hungry at the end of the 3 days and had the treatment repeated every 10 days till no live worms were seen.

Check with your vet

I had the same thing. It cleared up after the first dose of wormer when they were 2 weeks old x

Sorry, meant to add that they're 4 weeks now & that nasty grainy poo never returned :)

Thanks, that's interesting to know.  I will give it a couple more days I think, and monitor it, and then worm.

Def think it is worms.  And have started first worming dose today at 10 days.  Don't want to leave them any longer.
Is there anything safe to treat the bitch with too?  I assume that I can't give her anything as it will transfer to pups...

dam is always wormed at same time as pups im useing pacur and mum gets adult dose of wormer on 1st day as i worm pups ,pups are done over 3days with puppy dose. if dam isnt wormed pups will get worms bad again......edit to say i have a toy breed and so small pups, mum being wormed hasnt upset pups at all even tho they have had 3 days of being wormed herself :)

Right, I've done pups and mum (good grief that is a huge dose of 10% for her - she wasn't impressed! I ended up wearing quite a bit of it :) ...).

Have had several litters before, and not had this problem.  Let's hope this sorts it.
- By white lilly [gb] Date 22.02.13 18:20 UTC
im sure it will just make sure mum is done same time as pups and the worm burden will lessen all the time :)

I found this on doing a Google search! : http://www.champdogsforum.co.uk/board/topic/117484.html

Sounds like it could be milk-rich poo?  Also sounds like it is common in human babies too.  Not really had this before.  Will keep up with the worming but it may just be a 'phase' we have to go through........
- By white lilly [gb] Date 23.02.13 14:06 UTC
yes could well be that too i had that with 2 litters before but was around day 4-5 i think as mums milk was coming thru, i said could be worms as yours are close to warming age :)
- By kennel maiden [gb] Date 23.02.13 14:56 UTC
TBH, I would rather it was worms!  Coz you can sort that....
- By white lilly [gb] Date 23.02.13 14:57 UTC
yes very true as i ended up at vets and put on ab's :(
