Topic Dog Boards / General / Joining words when adding affix
- By CVL Date 17.02.13 18:16 UTC
Hi all,

This is a silly, ponderous, question.  I love coming up with hypothetical KC names, and take even greater delight in pondering witty ways in which to link on my affix at the end.  Daft no doubt, but I have a nice long list for future reference.

So what are the rules regarding joining words?  I see it has to be a preposition, but could you have two words?  Eg. 'off at' 'off from' 'off for'?  I realise 'off' isn't on their recommended list, but as far as I know it is still a preposition (but I stand to be corrected there!).

Thanks,

Clare

I dont know, but with the preponderance of misuse of OF and OFF I'd expect too many would get it wrong in catalogues, critiques and pedigrees.

I have just enquired about this to the KC as I wanted a foreign word to link with my affix.  You can only use one word so I'm back to the drawing board with my ideas.....

You are only allowed the following words:
of, at, to, in, via, for, del, von, vom, cum, mit, with, over, avec, from, among, unedr, between.

Personally I prefer to not use a joining word. I just add my affix at the end.

Not quite right: the KC gives that list of words as a guide. :-)

It is only permitted to use a valid preposition between the dogs name and the added
Kennel Name. You do not have to use a link word but should you choose to, the
following words may assist you:

OF AT TO IN BY VIA FOR DEL VON VOM CUM MIT
WITH OVER AVEC FROM AMONG UNDER BETWEEN

Goldmail - my response from the KC is as follows - Unfortunately it would not be possible to use XXXX X as a linkword when
adding a Kennel Name as the linkword must only be one word and should be a  preposition. Italian one word prepositions would likely be
acceptable.

By not adding a joining word in my case would sound silly!

There should be something suitable here. :-)

like 'Insieme'

Thanks all :-)

My curiosity got the better of me this morning and I rang the KC (how sad am I!?)

Anyway, it can definitely only be 1 word, but they no longer insist on it being a preposition.  So you can essentially use any word you want, so long as it's not rude or excessively long (that's what they said, verbatim).

Cheers JG, never knew that. :)
