Topic Dog Boards / General / Companion(?) shows

Ok, I havnt been to one for years, but could you let me know what catagories you can have.
So far we have thought of
Dog that looks most like the owner
Dog with waggiest tail

Now I cant think of anymore.
So what are the groups that could be used??? No 'proper' dog show groups as this is a fun thing trying to intergrate the local community.

Also how much per class??? I am thinking 50p per class (not that I have banded figures around with anyone else) but what sort of price is charged per class for a fun dog show???

This is not a money making thing, this is part of a larger show all proceeds to charity!!!

If anyone has organised one and ca give me some tips then please pm me x
Lea :)

Think if it's a Companion Show (used to be Exemption) you do have the Group classes but the fun classes are up to you, it's run under KC rules for Companion shows. By far the most shows I've been to have been 'fun' shows i.e. not under KC rules, and anything goes.

One annual show used to have a class called "Stars In Their Paws" which was sort of like Fancy Dress, but the dog had to 'come' as someone famous. My first ever First prize at a dog show was won by my boy in this class, he has a minimal mask (a bit like stubble) and 'eyeliner' eyes so I put a red bandanna on his head, attached some fake hair plaits with beads in them, and he appeared as Captain Jack Sparrow.

One show I went to had games classes, I didn't enter but there was something like a Bonio race where each dog (on lead) had to run up to a flowerpot with a bonio under it, get the biscuit with no help from owner, eat it and then both run back to the start. I think there was also another race where the owner had to eat a biscuit as well (cream crackers!).

haha sounds great :)
So a companion show is under KC rules, but a fun show isnt???
Fun dog show is more like we are after (need to get the name right)
This is all part of a bigger show in a main arena so need to limit it or we will need to section off the main arena for it. so need to work that out as well.
Keep it coming please
ALL ideas are welcome and I am grateful for any!!!

That's about right... but you might want to adopt some of the KC rules, as I have seen fun shows where young puppies under 6 months were allowed to compete, depends on your viewpoint but it's maybe not fair to encourage members of the public [i.e. non dog show savvy people] to bring along young pups and stay for hours, not everyone can tell if their dog is getting stressed, or will put the dog first and go home if it isn't comfortable, especially in a community event where people are wanting to chat with other people.

That's a photo of one of the games classes, I must correct myself, it was a Bonio & Jacobs Cream Cracker Eating Race, each dog had to finish the Bonio and the owner had to cram down the Cream Cracker [Jacob's, I assume] before they could run back to the finish. I suppose it depends on how many entries you are expecting, but you could always run it in heats, culminating in a Grand Final. This is the only fun show I have ever been to where they had games (the flowerpot thing was a separate class, I've forgotten how that worked!), but the organisers were horsey people [Kauto Star was stabled in the next village] so gymkhana games are par for the course, I guess.

Yes Companion show has to be KC licensed and under their rules, otherwise you call it Fun show or anything else similar that you want.

Best biscuit or sausage catcher is another idea. Tatty-ead pretty much nailed all the common classes. :) I've seen Companion shows have classes for longest ears, but I think that's a bit unfair as it so depends on breed.

Oh just remembered another common one -Brightest Eyes. And when it isn't KC rules you can allow pups of any age, if it's KC you have to stick to 6 months minimum. I stuck Penny in a fun show aged 11 weeks last summer, just to socialise. :)

Best Trick
Longest Tail
Best Condition (and make sure the judge allows for age, sick of seeing a 10 or 14 month old dog constantly winning!)
Best Movement
Cutest Puppy (allows crossbreed puppies to have a go too)
Fastest Down
Best Biscuit Catcher
Most Appealing Eyes
Fancy Dress (dog not just kids)

And one I've only encountered once, but was clearly a norm for that one show - Best Decorated Lead!

The only one that I can't see already mentioned here is Junior Handler..
- By dorcas0161 [gb] Date 14.02.13 01:35 UTC
Egg and spoon is just as normal race except dog and handler run together, handler has dog lead in one hand and spoon with an egg on it in the other, I think we had pot eggs.
No keeping your thumb on the egg to keep it on the spoon.
