Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Burns mixer

I have always added Burns mixer to one of my dogs Naturediet to bulk it out as he puts on weight easily and the small amount of Nd he gets looks a but mean! I also use it mixed in with a little fish 4 dogs kibble to make a 'kibble mix' which I can use in his kongs, treat balls, training etc.
Burns now only sell the mixer in 2kg bags instead of 7.5 kg which now makes it very expensive. I cannot find another Rice based mixer anywhere. He has had rice as a carb all his life (he's 7) and I am worried about changing to Wheat based biscuits as he does well on it. Can anyone recommend another good mixer.

Could you not just add some boiled rice if you want to bulk it out? Or add the F4D to the ND?

I was going to say the same as pedlee, but then noticed you'd mentioned that you use the kibble mix in treat balls etc!... So, yeah! Might get a bit gunky!
The only thing I can think of is Robbie's (made by George Burns) Robbie's do a meat free mixer (which is the same as the Burns) but... If memory serves me well it's a kibble that you have to soak? I *think* So it may not be the answer!?
Sorry, possibly not too helpful if the Robbie's is dehydrated.

I would add cooked rice , cant see it being too much of a problem with the treats ball even if gooey. Otherwise how about adding nature diet fruit and veg mix for bulk and not the rice.
I agree that if you use carb and have always used rice I would avoid wheat> Maybe a potato based kibble ?

Have a look at the  Robbie's Mixer here
http://www.landofholisticpets.co.uk/Robbies_Meat_Free_Mixer_for_dogs.html
Hope that works! Have heard good reports about it.
I use the complete Robbie's and my dogs love it. Also use the Luath dry kibble from Land of Holistic Pets, dogs love both.

Thanks, have looked at Robbie's but it is more expensive than Burns. I dont use boiled rice as the Burns mixer is very very crunchy and good for his teeth. I like the idea of fruit and veg for bulk so will also try that. I think I'll just have to accept the additional cost of Burns mixer as he's had all his life along with Naturediet and looks so fit and well on it. I think the old saying 'If it aint broke dont fix it' maybe worth the extra cost!

My elderly cocker spaniel is having difficulty with hard biscuits and I have been looking at tinned wet food as an addition to her biscuits in a half/half mix. How many meals am I likely to get out of a tray of Natures Menu as I am working out the best food to give her ( and the cost ) In your opinion is it better to add it to 'complete' dry biscuits or just a mixer biscuit ( I have also been looking at Burns mixer )
Any advice would be really helpful.

Can you change where you buy it from to see what price savings you could make?  For instance I just looked at the Burns site here and it's £3.64 per kilo for the 2kg pack but £2.79 per kilo if you buy 4 x 2kg (total £22.30).  They'll deliver for free if you spend over £50

Zooplus have it for £2.27 per kilo if you buy 3 x 2kg (total £16.49) and they have an extra 10% discount for first time users!  Spend over £19 and delivery is FREE

Hi,the Burns mixer is very crucnchy so it may not suit your elderly dog unless you soak it first. I have a 12kg crossbreed and she has 1/3 Naturediet with a small handful of a complete dried per meal (A.M & P.M). She is only just 2 years old and very lively. My 7 year old cross breed who weigh 16kg also has 1/3 ND but with a handful of just mixer bisciuts per meal. I have used Nd fo rthe last 9 years and been exceptionally pleased with it,lovely coats, firm poo's !! I find the cheapest place is Berriewooods £12.80 for a case of 18 x 390g (free delivery if you buy 4 cases) but I have 3 dogs so can buy in bulk.

Many thanks 'dogs a babe' for that. I just assumed Berriewoods would be the cheapest, but I pay 27.75 for 4 bags from them so Zooplus/Burns price works out much better. Thank you will use them next time.

Oh Boy!  Thanks for the tip off on Zooplus.  I've just signed up, got a discount and free delivery for the stuff my guys like with their dry food as a treat.  Usually too expensive for every day.

I have ordered a dozen boxes of Applaws  chicken pouches for £59.29 and can't believe my luck.  Under a £1 a pouch, and most places are around the £1.50 mark.

Nice one dab.  :-)  :-)  :-)
