Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Metritis 8 weeks after whelping??
- By LeanneStrudwick [gb] Date 09.02.13 19:25 UTC
Hi everyone, my bitch had a large litter of 8 pups (she's a toy breed) 8 weeks ago, she had an emergency c-section and milk came in after 4 days, she seemed to heal fine with no problems. Today however I noticed she had bloody discharge, it looks the same as when she is in heat but its a bit "stringy"
I called the vet she said to bring her in first thing in the morning, she appears fine in herself. I'm thinking it could be metritis? But I thought that was a problem within the first couple of weeks post whelp? She's 2 in a couple of months, this was her first litter.
If anyone has any experience with this I'd be very interested to hear your story/advice. I'm so worried about her and don't really feel comfortable just "waiting" til morning.
Thanks in advance.

I have certainly had post partum discharge up to 12 weeks after whelping.  If there is no unpleasant odour (signalling infection), any sign of fever, or the bitch otherwise being unwell, then I would think it normal clear out.

Ahh that's made me feel much better, it doesn't smell at all, and she's acting normal. Thank you very much for your reply.

My girls have also had discharge weeks after the whelping and one came to season when the pups were 12 weeks old.
I would monitor her temperateure and check the smell and if not ok, not worry.
I don't like taking them to vets unless absolutely necessary as have bought back bugs before, as of course many dogs going to vets have something wrong with them (virus, infection). If you take her, I would carry her from the car to the consultation table and back.

Thanks noora, I spoke to the vet on the phone this morning and decided not to take her in as obviously I didn't want her picking up anything for her sake and the puppies, she's completely normal in herself, the blood doesn't smell and not that much of it either today, her temperature is normal and she's eating, drinking and going to toilet fine. Thank you for your advice. Much appreciated.

My girl had metritis following a c section the main difference in discharge is that in metritis the loss will be bright red fresh blood and not the dark altered blood following normal whelping. Temp will be elevated and milk will diminish. If in doubt get her checked this can be very serious.

Similar to previous poster ... one of my girls had metritis following a normal birth. I was worried by the amount of blood still (which wasn't bright red) and the slightly raised temperature. My breeder friend and mentor wasn't worried, nor was my vet, even though I rang through for 2 days. The 3rd day I took her in, later that week she had life saving surgery!

I do know metritis is something that a bitch can get for a few weeks post whelping, it's also something that can be contracted after a season. You do need to monitor the temperature, that's going to be the first give away, and if you have even the slightest of concerns I'd say take her in. Ask vet to come out to vehicle to see her if necessary. My bitch was acting normally the first few days, maybe a little quiet, but then she went downhill.

Am sure your girl is absolutely fine, but if you are concerned then do act quickly, metritis is a very serious condition.

Oh no, thank god you picked up on it, I'll get her checked in that case, just to be safe. The blood is a darker red as opposed to bright red, she's not nursing the pups anymore so her milk has dried up already. I suppose it's better to be safe than sorry, I have taken her temp again and it's still the same as earlier (101.5) but I won't risk it, I'll take her in the morning. Thank you.
