Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Chicken feet
- By Liz_R [gb] Date 08.02.13 18:51 UTC
I've discovered a new food to add to my dog's diet. Chicken feet, they absolutely love them, although it does look gross when they are chomping them up and the toes are sticking
out of their mouths :(
I have read that they contain glucosamine and chondroitin and best of all they only cost 99p a lb from the market.
A good addition to a raw diet :)

I have some on order due to arrive tomorrow. I am stupidly excited about them, I am not sure my dogs will be the same lol!

ROFL!  :-)  :-)  :-)

Sorry OwnedbyaBC, but I now have visions of you rolling in ecstasy with one firmly clamped between your teeth!

I'm not *planning* on that, but never say never LOL!

They are very popular with humans in China :) :)

Also Chinese people here too.

Where did you order them from ObaBC? I don't think our boring markets sell them round here. Are they raw or cooked?
- By Stooge Date 09.02.13 10:57 UTC
Definately raw, they are full of bones!  If you have a chinese supermarket they may have them frozen, or might order for you.
- By OwnedbyaBC [je] Date 09.02.13 12:58 UTC
Esme they are from Manifold Valley Meats.
The order missed the ferry yesterday, and is now sat en route somewhere and won't be arriving until monday, and that along with them cutting all contact with me in favor of someone else from here who contacted them to organise stuff after I had been in talks I won't be recommending them. They seem to have good reviews on the mainland, but I am far from impressed

Funny question - do you need to take the nails off? Its making me cringe just thinking about it but I just wondered...
- By Stooge Date 09.02.13 13:09 UTC
No, I don't think they need a manicure :)

Reminds me when the dogs would have a cow's hoof or pig trotter. Cheerfully chomping a part of the body which is clearly identifyable. Wish I wasn't so squeemish!!

That's a shame. I was getting quite excited about them myself! I'll have to send out my contacts to check out the Chinese supermarkets then :-)

I haven't used this company, and they are dehydrated not raw, but they might be good? http://www.justdogsshop.co.uk/natural_dog_treats/2334-natural_chicken_feet_save_25_when_buying_in_bulk

They are raw and I don't take the nails off. The butcher I got them from said Chinese people eat them deep fried as a crispy snack. Sound nice but unhealthy (I'm trying to watch my weight ).
They are also good for freaking out kids, :)

Especially when you pull the tendons and make the toes contract!

Part of the staple diet in South Africa too! Very 'cheep cheep'. Sorry about the pun!

We went out to a chinese resturant once and ordered Chicken feet by accident, really wanted crab claws. Anyways the wife started tucking in and didnt realise until I said you have a "chickens foot in your mouth!" LOL  we said to the chinese waitress, "we dont like these" she replied "nor do I they is minging" would you like some sweet and sour chicken instead sir....O yes please the wife said with a chicken foot hanging out of her chops! lol

I think some people feed them, but I haven't. I don't know if you can give raw pork?
- By Harley Date 11.03.13 15:50 UTC
I feed all types of raw meat but always freeze it first - my dogs love pork but some can find it quite rich to begin with so maybe feed in small quantities to start with and increase the amounts fed as your dog gets used to it.

I feed all sorts of meat & fish - I don't necessarily freeze first.  If you are in the UK the only one with anything seriously problematic is beef (and I can't remember what the organism is - but it's pretty rare).   Pork isn't good if on the continent, and salmon should be frozen in Canada/North America.

Pork does seem to upset some - as does fatty lamb.  Mine threw up fish regularly when I first started feeding it (I like fresh sprats as they have the heads on & you can meter the dose!) - but now seem to be fine on it.

Dog's guts are simple & short - if it's really bad news it comes up (sometimes to be eaten again - often more than once) - if not so bad, then it passes through.   Sometimes they get diarrhoea - but to be honest very rarely indeed.  It's more common that I overdo the bone & have the opposite problem which is why I feed veg - even though I am not convinced of the dietary necessity of it.
