Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / 5 Day Old Puppy - Yelloe Green Stools
- By Goldiemad [gb] Date 31.01.13 09:38 UTC
I have a friend with a litter of 5 day old pups. One of the pups has developed yellowy green stools, they are perfectly formed and she is passing them fine, but she is moaning and seems to be in discomfort. She is still feeding well, but appears uncomfortable. Her vet has said she has seen this before and often the pups just fade, has anyone any suggestions?

Hello,
The vet is possibly linking green stools to fading puppy syndrome caused by CHV infection. Green stools are thought to be one of the possible first signs of the infection, and within a few hours other symptoms start to develop with most if not all the litter being lost within a short space of time. Symptoms of CHV can be seen this early in puppies. If CHV is the cause there is still some hope and there are some excellent threads on this site that may help.

Green stools may also be a sign of infection in the gut which could cause the pup to fade if left untreated.

However, although the normal stool of newborn puppies should be brown to yellowish brown & fairly well formed a common problem can be a loose, foamy yellow to yellowish green stool. Its presence will often be made known by soiling of the bedding. The cause is usually overfeeding and overstimulation of the digestive system. The digestive enzymes, mainly from the pancreas, are partially depleted, and the liver is overactive and excessive bile is released into the gut, which accounts for the yellowish green color. The pH is lowered (more acid) because of lack of buffering action of the digestive enzymes, and the bowel becomes hyperactive. The problem can be seen in normal litters that are fat & healthy, presumably when the bitch produces an abundance of milk.

So, before I would jump to the worst conclusion I would look at how much milk the dam is producing and/or if this little one is feeding excessively, as this may be the cause. If so, a very small rest from the milk bank, substituting with a product called Pet nutri-drops may help. It allows nutrients to bypass digestion and is absorbed directly into the bloodstream and will allow the puppys digestive system time to rest and recover.

Please note, I am not a vet and can only share my own experiences. I am sure people with more lots more experience will soon be along to share their thoughts on this so that you can help your friend investigate several options.

Any updates on the poo situation? I'm asking as my 12 day old pups have runny yellow poo today :( I was wondering if Mum has eaten something that might upset small tummies through the milk. She is eating well, pups are feeding well & growing faster than any litter we've had. She has an abundance of milk & 4 pups. Mum must have been peckish yesterday...she nosed open the fridge & helped herself to cheese & cold sausages! If still runny poo in 2 days, I may delay 1st dose of wormer till things settle down. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated :)

The poos in my friends litter were not runny, they were perfectly formed. I have emailed my friend to see how she is doing.

Hope you little ones do OK.
