Your breeder will tell you what the pup is being fed on and it is best to not change over to something else too soon.

Hi, usually the best person to take advice from to begin with is the puppy's breeder and feed what the pup is used to for at least a few weeks. If its suitable for a growing puppy, the pup is growing well and its tummy is settled then there is ususally no need to change. Some people like to feed a good quality complete food (dry) but soak it for young puppies and others like to feed a raw type diet (BARF), or cooked meat and biscuit. There are as many ways to feed well as there are breeds of dog! I use a complete puppy food like Arden Grange or Nutro with a very little meat. Although you can ask your vets advice, sadly many are influenced by profit and suggest you feed Hills - as they get a good commission! It is a good food if a dog needs a special diet - but most dont. Just my opinion.

Carter,
Well don't leave us in suspense :) What kind of pup are you getting?

Like the rest I'd keep the pup an the same as the breeder to start with. My own preference for feeding an adult dog is a complete food that just needs soaked because I find it the easiest to use when we go camping. It all just comes down to what suits your circumstances but isn't it changed days with the amount of variety of feeding available?

Carter,
Congratulations and thanks for letting me know. The suspense was killing me :)
Lovely dogs but I don't know anything about them. I remember a rescue one at the training class just barked non-stop:eek: They said it was quiet at home though :)
Good luck and keep us posted.

Carter One word of warning, discourage unnecesary barking from the get go, in c ommon with most Spitz breeds they can be vocal.

When the pup barks at the door or something legitimate, praise, and then say quiet, at the same time putting your hand over the muzzle, and praising. If you have a determined barker, that keeps out of reach of you in order to indulge, then a spray bottle set to jet staright in the face will startle long enough for you to get in the command quiet, as soon as he has stopped and you have got the command out, copious gentle praise.

With my four Elkhounds, when the do0orbell goes I have to make sure |I quiet the eldest, as otherwise the others restart. They only have to see the bottle and they look at me as if to say 'spoil sport'!

Trust me you will have a much better relationship with your neighbours if you do your best to minimise any barking!

With the Sammies white coat, I would avoid feding any tinned meat, as it often makes their toilet loose, and will cause staining!
