Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Dark red discharge week after mating
- By JanW [fr] Date 10.01.13 22:50 UTC
Hi all, I haven't had to ask a question for a long time but hope you can help me.  My girl was mated on 3/4/5 January they would have been days 12/13 and 14 of her season.  She has been a little quiet the last day or so and my OH was making a fuss of her when she walked away a couple of minutes later he saw two drops of dark red blood on the floor.  I checked her immediately to see if it was coming from her but it's hard to tell no real discharge there, I checked my other girls as well there is one other in season but nothing.  There is no horrible smell and her temperature is 38.4.  I will pop her to the vet tomorrow morning, I'm praying this is not the first signs of a Pyo, this is such a long awaited and planned litter.  What do you think?

My bitches continue to bleed after mating.  Up to the end of the season as normal.  If it doesn't smell, I think you'll find it's just her normal season.  They don't stop bleeding because they've been mated.

Thank you that does put my mind at rest a little, but she had stopped bleeding, well almost, just a very light coloured blood but this was very dark almost black.  I will keep an eye on her.

Thanks again.

That sounds like old blood that just needed to come away, it may have been trapped high up in her vagina and some exertion has dislodged it, this can happen to us humans too when we think things are done we get some stale blood passed, better out as it can't then become infected.

Watch her temp and give her a good sniff a couple of times a day and at the first hint of change get her to the vets for A/B's.

My bitch bleeds all through her season and did so for two weeks after mating too, she still took and is now on day 52. xx

Thanks all I feel better now!

I must admit my first reaction was panic then when I thought about it I realised that if it was that dark it was old blood so calmed down a bit!!  Nothing this morning, temp is normal no smell but I will keep watching!  Thank you!
