Hi I have a 18 week old staffordshire bull terrier who is growing health and fast day by day not so long ago a breeder recommended a diet which I've been sticking to and have seen working well and was also told to give lactol milk twice a day which I have been initially gulped all down when I would put the milk down however over the last week or so he has got less keen on having it I tried to put a few biscuits in with the milk still no joy and today he's not touched it.

So the question I ask is it normal they go off the milk ? Should I mix it in with his meals rather than give him separate and how long should you give your pup lactol milk for the pup to get the best out it for his diet ?

Thanks any help much appreciated

At that age they shouldn't need milk, normally stops before they leave the breeders, I give goats milk when weaning which I water down so by the time they leave me they are on pure water.

Provided he is still drinking water, eating his food, weeing and pooing then I wouldn't worry, as they mature and between growth spurts they tend to eat less then a week or 2 later will be acting half starved.

I used to make ready brek with lactol for any puppies I had and they loved it until they were about 4 months ago when they wouldnt touch it anymore. I still laugh thinking back to my gsd when he was a pup eating it with my then 8 month old st bernard having some too just for the novelty every morning. They had nuts etc for remaining meals. It was on the advice of one of the top breeders here that I started. Sounds like your dog has decided they have enough:-)

At 18 weeks a dog has no need to take milk. A puppy should be completely weaned by the time it leaves its mother and on good nutritious solid meals (this means NO milk). A female dog often naturally dries up by 6-8 weeks (this is nature) if not, she should be helped to get dry. I believe it is the duty of the breeder to ensure the puppy is "properly" weaned onto solid feeds before it leaves for it's new home.
Your straight answer; Your puppy does not need milk of any kind at this age!

Hi the breeder did wean the pup properly off milk onto solids however I was recommended by another breeder to give him lactol twice a day for his bone density and muscle mass but was never said how long for jus noticed he went off it totally off the lactol in the last week and a half did try mixing with a series of things I know he likes but didn't seem to work.  I jus gave it him as additional morning Nd evening aswel as his meals but all of a sudden seems like he's lost his appetite a little to dont know if its cus he's teething he's lost a few teeth can see new ones coming through n bruised gums doesn't seem him self to much that normal to ?

Teething won't have put him off drinking milk, he simply doesn't want/need it any more.

To soothe sore gums get 3 old tea towels and roll them up length ways and knot either end, dampen them under the tap and freeze, give one at a time to pup and swap when no longer cold, it works great.

I NEVER give pups milk at all, ever -they get what they need from their mum and when she stops feeding them they don't get any more -that's nature. I would be very wary of giving milk to an older growing pup as you could end up giving too much calcium causing all sorts of problems with growth.
