At work today a client brought in an 'Alaskan Malamute' and I'm not sure how to describe the colour; the best way I can describe it is 'blue brindle' because it looks as though it has grey and cream stripes. Or would it be sable? Are there any experts to help?

Sorry can't help you, but I bred a SWD this year who was born white and black, by 5 weeks the white was disappearing and now he looks like a blue roan Cocker LOL.  He's stunning!

For Mals 'Sable' has red.
Grey guard hair and cream undercoat is a norm :0)

But Mel, Malakai and (ooooh no, brains gone blank forgotten user name ~ has Mals and Canadian Eskimo Dogs) will know for sure of course.

Mals can look stripy ( horizontal stripes across the sides) when they need a good grooming, my girl does when her undercoat is ready to blow.

In the UK we really only have the wolf greys, seal (black with pale undercoat - some look black some look greyer) and the various shades of red - from setter red and almost chocolate to ginger and deep strawberry blonde shades!
Sable exists but doesn't give a stripy look and is not blueish.

There are idiot breeders crossing Mals with Akitas and I have seen beautiful brindle striped dogs ( almost looking like they are in pyjamas) looking like the Akita Inu which the owners have been convinced are pedigree Malamutes ,,,. When they clearly are Akita mixes.

With this dog the stripes are vertical, and even its face is stripy; I must admit my first throught that it was a cross because it looks a little too lightweight for a Mal, but it's a rescue dog so it's probably not in the best of conditions.

It's coloured all over like the body of this dog. How would that be described?

Not a Malamute with those colours/ markings.

The pic is the spit markings wise of the dog I'm thinking of ...... Owner sure is a Mal, I think Akita x .... Maybe with husky .,.

The one you saw wasn't called Koda was it???

'That's a pretty 'cross breed' you have there.'   ? ;-)

On a serious note though, it's so sad to see Sooo many duped owners ~ a fool and his money are soon parted I guess but the loathing I feel for the people breeding their pet Sled dog breeds, mixing them willy nilly with other breeds and using the ridiculous 'designer mix' hook in their 'Gumtree' ads knows no bounds.

Once again the Siberian Husky club of GB has had to close admissions to Rescue ( simply can't cope )
I really thought 5-6 years on from the Disney 'Snow dogs' films we might have been out of the woods, but seems there's a resurgence and also alas ( thanks to Twilight films) a resurgence of the ridiculous 'wolf dog' mixes.... Worrying as into the mix now come the breeds that were declassified by DEFRA.

I have never seen such poor types of Sibes and Mals  as I do today in the UK and VERY un-breed like temperaments :-(
