Having a whinge, sorry, but what a rubbish start to 2013...... went out for a nice long walk with fred.managed to avoid the broken bottle someone has kindly left on the pavement near our house.got home, took freds lead off, he did his usual funny 5 minutes doing circuits of the lounge then stopped dead and started squealing.had a look and saw the dew claw ripped so bathed it in salt water and wrapped in clean tea towel. Rang my vets who gave me number of duty vet....a guy I cant stand.he took over from my old vet practise and is a money making butcher hence why I moved.needs must though so took fred there and hes had to have it removed.apart from feeling a bit sorry for himself he will be ok.
However, my problem is that we are supposed to be taking him to meet our potential second dog tomorrow.really hope hes up to it.would hate to postpone.he was only sedated and given a reversal after the procedure and had a painkilling injection. What do you guys think?? Do you think I will be taking him tomorrow or not?!

I found my dog took several days to recover from sedation so yes, I would postpone if you want to be able to gage the dogs response to one another.

I have a Bearded Collie who does this on a regular basis, bless her.  She is always sedated, and I do give her metacam after 24 hours, and she gets it daily if needed for 3 or 4 days.  The "shell like" covering does take a while to build up and give protection, as the nerve endings are exposed after.  If a Chihuahua stands on her foot, or knocks her accidentally, she really cries out.  I did ask my vet if she was just being a baby.  She is a huge dog.  He said no, it really hurts like hell.

If a Chihuahua can get a response from old droopy drawers, I'm guessing that Fred won't want to be knocked by an unknown dog.  Just my thought on it, but I do deal with this scenario regularly with Cassie.

Our old labrador used to rip her dewclaws regularly, and it was the only injury (a bite from another dog, a cut pad from glass, tears from barbed wire etc) that ever made her cry out. It really is an excruciating injury. I hate the damned things.

poor boy--sounds like lots of TLC will be the order of the day. Hope he feels better soon and that he and you get to meet the new dog under better circumstances xx

Thank you for the responces everyone. He has woke up fairly reasonable. A little quieter than usual but I think he will be ok to meet the other dog. His foot is well bandaged and the other dog is quite quiet so I think we are ok to meet up. Phew

Because of the claw injury we all went for a short walk then played for a while in an indoor room.all went really well, fred was much more interested in him than he was of fred but it was all very friendly and sociable. Going out again tomorrow for an off lead run in  their paddock.being a lurcher he is very leggy and fast so just need to check that fred is ok with it. If he is then we can brin him home with us there and then so have spent today preparing for the new arrival (hopefully)!!!!!!
