What is offal? Does anyone know?
- By agilabs Date 28.12.12 09:50 UTC
for raw feeding purposes it is Liver, kidneys, & lungs. technically when people are eating it heart is offal too but it is a muscle meat so not the same.

Tripe is also offal, as is tongue, pigs trotters & snout and a few other items.

Quite a few things contain offal of some sort, sausages, faggots, haggis, black pudding & even pork pies(jelly section).

Have a look on this site. I think it explains it really well.

But lots of people mean more or less just liver and kidneys when they refer to offal.

I always understood it to mean internal organs not muscle meat, so heads and feet would not be offal, but tongues and brains yes.

That site explains tripe but offal is lots of other things aswell...

I knew quite a few but google, then wikipedia explains more that some wouldnt think of as offal!!

I'm with brainless on this. Offal as a general term refers to commonly used internal organs. eg liver, heart, lung, kidney and possibly tripe. for the purposes of raw feeding terminology heart and tripe don't contain the same vits and minerals etc as the others so counts as muscle meat. in butchery terms it may sometimes include brains and tongue but I've never heard of trotters etc included. :-) (I do work in butchery FWIW)

I know but it's an oft recurring subject and lots of people aren't sure whether tripe's included as offal. But the important thing is that if someone is raw feeding, they will need to give a range of food. That will usually include tripe, beef, chicken, lamb etc, including bone (whether whole or ground). And smaller amounts of liver, kidney etc.

Yes you def don't want to give liver/kidney to often it makes up a very small % of the meal.
Ex: Moose eats 2 pounds 2 ounces a day so I am safe to add 1 ounce of kidney/liver to her supper meal. She gets in total 7 ounces in a week.
Where T-Bone eats 10 ounces a day so I only add 1 ounce to her supper meal on Mon, Wed & Friday- she gets in total of a week 3 1/2 ounces.
I give liver one week the next week is kidney :)

I do a feeding of tripe once to twice a week- fish usually once a week usually on the weekend.

I agree with brainless, I thought it was basically anything which isn't muscle meat or bone.
