Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Feeding tripe alone
- By rdavies17 [gb] Date 27.12.12 19:00 UTC
My dog doesn't seem to like kibble on it's own, although, I would much prefer he did as I would just fed him on that.
He's been bought up with tripe mixed with it.
I have been buying him the wheat free kibble, 'Burns' as he's intolerant to the grains/cereals in all the other kibbles but it's just very expensive  so I was wondering if it would be ok to feed him the tripe on it's own and fruits and veggies with the tripe?

Personally, I would rather feed tripe alone than kibble. If you're talking about nice stinky raw green tripe anyway. It's not really recommended to mix raw food with kibble, but that's another story. The bulk of my youngster's diet is tripe and raw bones such as lamb ribs/chicken wings/chicken carcasses (he is a fussy lump). So I would say yes ;) Tripe is full of goodness, I (again-personally) don't feed fruit/veg, but some raw feeders do :)

Yeah I usually feed it mixed with the kibble, I know some say about digestion process but to be honest I didn't find any change from tripe alone and then kibble in the evening. I'm feeding him the nice stinky tripe that isn't bleached. Also, if I buy frozen tripe in bulk, how the hell do I cut it, as I can't let the whole thing thaw cut it and then re-freeze it can I :S

If you buy it freeflow, you can just shake out what you need for the next day. Some companies do chunks freeflow, or mince. We use Albion who are very reliable, though their prices have gone up recently.

I am not a purely raw feeder but I am sure those on here who are will be able to give advice, from what I have read, just feeding tripe on it's own is not sufficient to meet all nutritional needs.
As I understand it you need to get a balance of vitamins and minerals into the diet for a puppy. Most of the breeders I know who feed raw give a range of foods, and also add supplements to ensure that the puppy is getting all it's requirements for steady growth.

Yes this is what I thought but would fruit and veggies be sufficient enough. I mean when we have turkey/chicken/pork I shall feed him scrap bits of this too?

The frozen tripe I buy for mine comes in large chunks, I take out what I want and cut smaller if necessary with a sharp kitchen knife or kitchen scissors. I think it's good for him to have to use his teeth on his food. Tripe alone was not good for my boy, who brought some of it back up, so I now mix it 50/45 with raw (previously frozen) lambs' hearts and a couple of bits of lambs' liver (the other 5%).  He has tripe & heart for breakfast, and for dinners one day kibble, the next Nature Diet, to make sure he gets his other bits and pieces.  He also gets any left-over cooked veges with his breakfast.

I was thinking about buying from here,

http://www.daf-petfood.co.uk/daf-frozen-dog-foods/24-daf-bulk-pack-tripe-minced-60-x-454g-1lb.html

all in bulk, but would it be cheaper to maybe get one from local butchers?? What has everyone found in their experiance??

You can refreeze meat after it's thawed, just don't let it get warm :) I have just thawed and split a load of chicken necks and tripe chunks for refreezing! I would be not be totally comfortable not feeding bone alongside tripe, and my dogs also get raw egg & shell, raw fish, brewers yeast and small amounts of garlic powder alongside other meats, offal and bone. Do you mean you're feeding raw scraps? If you're feeding tripe, it really wouldn't be too much of an effort to add bone and bits and pieces to improve his diet, you can feed fruit and veg but I personally don't bother. That's not to say they don't get the odd bit if it's going though. There is a really good facebook group that can help you out if you need some good advice :)

DAF is a popular supplier amongst raw feeders.

Did you find the tripe diest works out cheaper than feeding quality brand kibble?I know for me, tripe, it's better for him becuase I can tell with the size of his poos!!

You will find that on raw, because of the lack of fillers, there is less to excrete. You will pay the same as if not less feeding raw than a good kibble. I pay approx 50p/lb for tripe, 45p/lb for chicken mince, 60p/lb for lamb mince, just got 8 very meaty chicken carcasses for a fiver, fish heads for free from a nice fishmonger man, big bag of pork bones (some dogs don't seem to tolerate pork as well as others) for £1. Half the fun is tracking down the bargains ;) haha. Sprats are really cheap at morrisons and they sometimes have lamb bones too. They also do cheap liver and kidney. Mine love the sprats still frozen! The only thing I've found that doesn't agree with my dogs is a mixed beef and kidney mince from my supplier. I assume it's too much offal for them.
I would try your dog on a good balanced raw diet, it's not rocket science when you get into it and if you can handle tripe you can handle anything, lol.

Daf is a good supplier of raw meat. I feed raw and have done for 5 years. Sorry imo tripe on its own is not going to be a balanced diet. Unlike us fruit and veg added will not balance out the diet either. Dogs are carnivores first and foremost. There is 2 schools of though regarding fruit and veg some people believe it is necessary to add some others like myself feed purely ram meat and bones and fish. Either way your dog needs a wide range of all parts of the animal and preferably a wide range for example chicken beef and lamb
If you are interested in raw feeding you need to research a good book to start with is the dogs dinner by ann ridyard there are many others but I like this one as its an easy read. Personally if your not doing raw with all aspects I would stick to kibble and freeflow tripe. As for costs of kibble v raw I find it slightly cheaper than the  cost of a mid range kibble but I buy in bulk. Others are able to source even cheaper than I do
Good luck with your reading

Are you looking to make a change based on cost or is it simply because he doesn't like kibble on its own?

How old is your dog?

I'm a raw feeder but have fed puppies and adult dogs on kibble in the past and still use kibble for a few meals here and there.  I'd say tripe, even with fruit and veg, isn't sufficient for your dogs dietary needs.  The key is to balance bone with a variety of meat and offal and, although there are some very good guidelines around, some of it depends on your dog as to what they can easily digest and what suits them.  You will get a lot of very good advice here as many of us do raw feed BUT it's critical to do your own research first.  Have a read of authors such as Ian Billinghurst, Tom Lonsdale and Kymythy Schultze for good background advice then you can start working out what best suits your dog.  A raw diet is perfect for dogs that cannot tolerate grain.  Incidentally has your dog ever been tested for this or have you discovered it by trial and error?

If you want to feed predominantly kibble, but simply make it more interesting then it's ok to only add tripe as the nutritional requirements will be met by the biscuit rather than the topping

Good advice dab as usual

There are other grain-free kibbles besides Burns which you may find are more affordable.

James Wellbeloved has a range which has potato instead of rice.

Working HPRs is very affordable and has a duck and potato and a fish and potato food without VAT: http://www.workinghprs.com

Fish4Dogs uses potato (I think).

And of course Orijen and Eden are grain-free (although more pricey).

There are many alternatives to Burns and many grain-free foods...
