Can anyone give me info on taking a puppy back from france and if it can be done by train? What would the cost be( not including the price of the train if thats allowed) thanks
- By kayenine [gb] Date 17.12.12 21:56 UTC
Dogs aren't allowed on the Eurostar so you'd need to drive and go via Eurotunnel or take the ferry.

yes, no dogs on the train and only cargo on a plane......

you could come over in a car or foot passenger on a f e r r y (you would have to use a f er ry with kennels though), the easiest way is definitely car either through the tunnel or by ferry

sorry about the spacings, it keeps coming up with weird connections :-(

Not an awful lot of costs involved really, from just France. You need the pets passport (rabies vaccination given at 3 months of age, then a 21 day wait before the dog can travel) which of course will need to be issued in France so no idea what they charge there, but would imagine the breeder will charge for this. The dog will need to be treated for tapeworm (by a vet, and the treatment detailed in the passport, including time of day it was given) 1-5 days before travelling. To take a car through the tunnel and back costs around £100 (+/-) although actual cost depends on time of day you travel. Peak time more expensive, early morning and night cheaper. To bring a dog back with you you have to pay a fee (currently £15 -must be booked when you book your ticket) and before you board the tunnel train you need to visit the pet travel section at the eurotunnel in Calais and get them to check the paperwork and the microchip. The only other cost involved is your petrol costs.

Thanks so much for the info,it seems way easier than from the states.

It's very easy, much easier than when I imported my first dog 5 years ago. remember the puppy needs to be microchipped too and recorded in the passport as it is checked at pet passport control before boarding the train.

Even cheaper than the tunnel is either P&O Calais to Dover, or DFDS Dunkerque to Dover at around £20 roundtrip (booked well in advance) for the car plus £15 for the dog on the return leg.  Even in a large motorhome I have got fares as low as £30 roundtrip on those routes.  Get the breeder to arrange the tapeworm stamp a couple of days in advance for you taking it back as it will be cheaper at their own vet than you using one of the clinics closer to the ports that charge higher prices.

I've paid similar prices for the Tunnel; £30 for a car.  It all depends what time of year, what day of the week and when in the day you travel.  That was a weekend in early November travelling 9pm Calais - Folkestone on the Friday and 2pm Sunday afternoon Folkestone to Calais.

Does anyone know the price if the puppy is flown in to the uk rather than collect the puppy?
- By Brainless [gb] Date 18.12.12 23:53 UTC
Only way to fly a dog into UK is Cargo and with clearance charges at healthrow makes it way more expensive unless your driving a thirsty vehicle from the top of Scotland to Eastern Europe perhaps.

The only way to know is to get quotes and do the math with both options, depending on destination and start points.

Remember even with flying you will have travel both ends to airports that are on approved routes.

I used a company called Ladyhaye - they were excellent. It cost me £500 to fly a pup from Prague to Manchester - no extra charges at the airport, but I did have to buy a crate.

I just contacted them and they said they dont use flights from france but would pick up the puppy by road, has anyone used this service before?

Having just traveled to and from Holland in the car with two dogs and using the Channel tunnel I would 100% recomend it as a safe and easy way to get to the continent.
I was immpressed with the number plate recognition of the tollboths, drove up at 7.30am Sat morning at Folkstone to be geeted by the screen saying "Good Morning Mrs T****" just a couple of buttons to push and a boarding pass popped out, drove to the terminal and let the dogs into the dog excersise area (My only gripe...it was securely fenced with agility equipment available...but absolutely full of poo!!! How very rude of people not to keep it clean..and poo bags were readily available) grabbed a cuppa and drove down to get onto the train..35 mins later and out the other end onto the motorway (That was a little surprising....we had to do some fast navigating as we assumed we would have to stop for passports but did not and had no time to turn on the sat nav.!.! ) We soon recalculated ! and were on our way.
On our return we entered the terminal and missed to Dog Zone! Our fault although it is not well signposted, but soon found it, easy trip through the check in zone and then drove onto the train. It turfs you out the other side onto the M20 and away.
We drove to Folktone the day before and stayed overnight in the Travel lodge at Ashford, very good clean and plenty of places to eat very close, good breakfast the following morning from 6.30am. On the way home we left North East Holland at 9.30am and were home in Somerset by 7pm.
We did 983 miles in 4 days !!
If you can travel over yourselves then this is one route I would recomemd.

Kenzi I know a firm here in Kent that transport dogs to and from the continent. Licensed company, lovely caring responsible owner with lots of experience and a huge dog lover - he has two search and rescue dogs of his own- and has lots of recommendations from satisfied clients. If you pm me I can send you details of his website.
