Hi
I have an almost 6 month old black lab bitch, she's in good health and a happy girl normally but this last week there have been a few changes that are concerning me; she seems to be producing more saliva than normal, her mouth is often quite wet, she doesn't drool as such but more saliva than normal, she isn't a "jowelly" lab like my male lab who is a drooler, so I don't think it's that. I noticed her tail is very wet too and I think it's because she's been licking it. She is quite nervous at times and there has been some anxiety in our house this week due to family bereavement, so maybe she's picking up on that but I'm not sure. This morning her bed was really wet but her back end is dry so it must be coming from her mouth? I have checked her rear end and there is no swelling or anything obvious. She's not quite herself as I'm sure other dog owners will know what I mean, not lethargic but quieter than normal. She sniffs at her back end occasionally as does Cooper my male 15 month old male lab (hes neutered), could she be releasing scents that I can't pick up but they can? She has also been trying to hump him quite a lot. ..I took her to the vet yesterday and he couldn't find anything obvious and all seemed ok, he thought it might be a touch of anxiety or possibly an infection so gave her 5 days worth of anti-biotics.
I have tried googling this but got nowhere. One theory of mine is that she may be having hormone changes and it is unsettling her hence the saliva and quietness, I've been told Labs normally come into season a little later than smaller breeds. My question to anyone reading this is what should I do? What do you think, anyone gone through anything similar? I am thinking of phoning the vet later as I'm not sure anti-biotics are what she needs.
Sorry this is so long, any help/advice gratefully received
Thanks, Margie
