Hi everyone

As the title says we had to rush my poor boy to the vets this morning.

My partner had all the dogs out this morning for a walk, when olli dropped an had a grand mal seizure :(
he managed to get him home, he then went on to have another 6 grand mal seizure between 6.45am and 9.20am.

after the 3rd seizure he has not stood up again, he was carried into the vets etc.

I phoned the vets at 9am and was advised to take him straight in, so that they could sedate him.

I have just had an update on his condition, his eyes are still staring with fixed pupils, he is still panting really heavy and he has had the max dose of sedation they can give him ;(

The vet said he feels his sight has been affected this time.

Has any other owner had this before and there dog made a full recovery???

I am absolutely devastated and just need some positive encouragement ;(

When my bitch first started with fits a few years ago, it was all new to me, so I asked loads of questions.  One of them was "how long have you sedated an animal and then successfully brought them out of a seizure."

I was told almost a week.

There is some hope, the last update we had was two hours ago.

The waiting game is terrible, I no he is in the safest place possible and our vet is brilliant, what scares me is that Olli is not responding to medication we only seem to get three weeks and 5 days seizure free max.

This is the worst I have ever seen him, I am lucky I have my other boys to try and keep my mind off things, my youngest springer seems to be looking for Olli :(

I really feel for you.  Gemma's last seizure was brought on by a deterioration in her heart murmur, and it was the worst seizure I have ever watched.  Felt sick and useless.

I am sending positive vibes.

No advice but hope things improve. Have had a dog who used to pass out due to a heart problem which was scary enough

No experience of epilepsy in dogs, so very sorry to hear of Ollis problems & wishing you all a good outcome. Fingers & paws crossed.

I have just had an update from the vet, Olli is still out of it with the sedation, which my vet is pleased about as it is letting his brain recover.

However, he has advised of a possible other problem.

My vet checked Olli at 4pm between clients and he was still settled, they decided to put a catheter in, to monitor his urine output.

Olli was checked again just after 5pm when our vet finished with his clients, he noticed that there was some blood in olli's urine in the catheter bag, he then noted that there was a red rash on his skin when the needle for the drip was placed, this all appeared with an hour!!

He has advised that it may not be a problem, however it could be autoimmune disease or he could have a bleed in his brain, he did say the bleed in the brain is very unlikely though as he has not had a head injury.

He is taking bloods off Olli now to run to check his platelets.

Has anyone heard or had experience of this?

I hope he recovers soon

How terrifying! I have no advice with things like this....... I pray I never will have to face something so awful it must be devastating. Sending my best wishes, your vet sounds as though they have everything in hand that they possibly can do, I hope that Olli will pull through. x

I have never felt so useless.

I am still waiting on the update of his bloods, So i am hoping the saying, no news is good news, is true!

This has been the longest day of my life, even though Olli has been diagnosed with epilepsy, today really scared me :(

The update I got last night with regards to Olli's blood, is that his platelets are breaking down and the liver enzymes  are also rised :( which he said could account for the blood in his urine.

He did say there had been a change with his sight and he was more reactive to the light than when he first went in.  (still trying not to build my hopes up to much)

I was advised that they would keep the injectable Epiphen topped up though out the night.

They said they would phone throughout  the night if anything changed.

Back of 12 mid night I received a call from the vet on call to advise Olli was coming around from the comma state and he was very agitated, foaming at the mouth and had a muzzle twitch, she also advised that his temperature was so high the thermometer could not take a reading.   The on call vet called our vet at home that deals with Olli's care and he was going in straight away to try and stabilise him. 

I received a call from my normal vet about an hour after the first call and was advised that the only thing they could try is to put Olli into a medical comma, my own vet feels there is more going on than just the Epilepsy, he is also concerned that when they gave him a dose of steroids, his temp lowered quickly, so he admitted that he was unsure what part the steroids are playing in his care.

He will be phoning Glasgow again this morning to speak to Neurology to see what the next course of action is, he is hoping to reduce the amount of the comma medication in the afternoon to try and let Olli come around, for the time being it is a waiting game :(

He did advise that he has 3 dogs previously that have been as bad as Olli and two had to be pts and one pulled through and is still alive today, I know my boy is fit and healthy apart from this horrible disease that just cant seem to be controlled :(

I know Olli is seriously ill and I know the vets cant keep his sedated forever, so I did inform my vet that when he feels that everything has been tried and nothing else can be done I wont think twice about letting him go, as much as it is breaking my heart, its not fair on him :(

I am so sorry for you and Ollie, words are never enough. The strain and worry for you must be unbearable. My thoughts and prayers are with you both.

We have just had another update.

His temp has returned to normal and he is still stable in the comma, however he has now started passing rectal blood :(

Vet phoning Glasgow this morning for there help to see if they can try anything else, I will be updated again when he has spoken to the neurologist :(

I've been wondering with fingers crossed.  Everyone on CD will be praying that all comes well. I do hope that Olli makes it.  You must feel so torn inside.  Thinking of you.

I think you need another massive {{{{{hug}}}}} to go along with everyone elses here, we can all imagine just how heartbroken we would feel in this situation, it's a waiting game which are always the worst, we are all thinking of you and Olli. xx

I hope the neurologist has some good advice that turns things around.

I just saw your post I am so sorry for your loss :( and that you for your kind words

I have had another update from the vet:

Glasgow have advised the amount of sedative has to be reduced, they are still waiting on his bloods come back from the lab.

They have advised that the bleeding can either be to do with the autoimmune disease or an infection, they are treating him with steroids and antibiotics.

His temp has remained the same and the hope is that they will be able to reduce the sedative enough by later this afternoon to get an idea if he can hold his own :/

My vet is phoning back in a few hours with an update so its just a waiting game, and I really hope my boy can turn this around, he has to try on his own now :(

We are still awaiting an update, I am hoping this is a good sign??

The vet I spoke to at 11.30 said she would call if there was any change and nothing so far, just waiting on our normal vet calling, they did say that they would try and get him off the sedation this afternoon.

The waiting is the worst part :(

I have just had an update from my vet.

Glasgow recommended that Olli be sedated for 8 hours and then the sedation reduced, this reduction started in the afternoon and so far he is holding his own,
he has not had any further seizures so far and my vet expects him to be asleep for the next 24 hours.

He has had some diarrhoea which could be down to a possible infection, they are still awaiting for the urgent bloods from the lab, which he is chasing up now.

I am trying really hard not to get to excited or feel to positive as I know we are no where near out the woods yet and he can changed as quickly as he has settled.

Glasgow have now also advised that if we do get him through this he has to go onto a high dose of Epiphen.

He did say again about the other dog that was as bad as olli and pulled through and that was 5 years ago and it is still going strong!!!

He said he would only phone tonight if there was any changes, as Olli is out for the count anyway!!

I think everyone's positive prayers are helping.

Hope it all turns out well for you.  Can't help wondering if it really really is epilepsy, to my knowledge it is hard to diagnose for certain.  Could it be some sort of infection that has affected his brain?  Hence the massively elevated temp?

Olli was diagnosed  with Idiopathic Epilepsy, this was after extensive blood test, glucose curves, ecg an mri and spinal tap  (think that's what it was called, they took fluid from his spinal cord area)
Olli had suffered many seizures prior to us going to Glasgow vet school Neurology department, his mri came back clear no signs of damage at all, which the neurologist was surprised about, considering the amount of seizures!!

However this time, my vet thinks there is an underlying issue which may be causing his seizure to be worse with his temp being sky high last night and it was the steroids that reduced it??  They have said it could be an infection, but last update they were still waiting urgent bloods, as they also thought autoimmune disease!!!

The currently have him on steroids as well as antibiotic to cover everything they suspect, hopefully if he get through the next 24 hours seizure free and his bloods reveal what is wrong, it will give the vets a better chance to help him...

My mum is a human nurse and she thinks the same as you some sort of infection.

I have just discovered, that there has been a confirmed out break of e coli at the park along the road from us, however we don't walk the boys there, but the burn travels from there right down the golf course, which is where olli jumps in!!  I have said to the vet, but he did not really mention anything...

We received a call from our vet just after 6pm to tell us that Olli had passed away in his sleep ;(

We are absolutely devastated and cant believe he has gone.

Rip my beautiful boy, you will never ever be forgotten. x

Am so sorry to read this. Poor Olli. You had tried so hard for him. At least he is free now,no more seizures and he passed in his sleep so he would not have been in pain. I know it's not much consolation for you but you did all that you could.

Oh I'm so sorry. What a tragedy for you. :-( Sleep well, Olli - no more pain.

So very sorry, my heart breaks for you and I shed tears when I read your last post. We were all praying for you both, but he is now without pain, unfortunately you have all the pain now.
