Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / How long is too long after waters breaking?
- By lucysmith [gb] Date 10.12.12 13:02 UTC
Hi All, am starting to panic a little, my girl is on day 61 today and her waters broke this morning at 10.50 and nothing has happened. I have spoken to the vet and he said to bring her in at 12.30 if nothing has happened. She is sleeping soundly, no distress or pushing, can see little ripples of contractions but nothing major yet, no discharge or blood etc. I don't want to rush into intervening too early but how long is too long before i should take action??

depends a lot on breed TBH

I won't let my breed go longer than 40 minutes, as it usually means uterine inertia.

i only put that time jean we have the same breed well the large breed so wanted her to know what happend with our girl so for others reading jean is right it does depend on the breed and size of dog. x

Thanks all, didn't need any intervention thankfully. The car ride did the trick and she delivered her first pup just as we arrived at the vets. We seem to be going quite smoothly since then. First pup born at 12.25 and we have 8 babies now, all doing well, nice weights and all feeding, think there may be one more but she is sleeping at the mo, having a well deserved rest. Phew.............

So pleased for you Lucy and glad that your bitch is ok.

Don't know about relaxing though!  This breeding lark is guaranteed to give us grey hairs!  :-)  :-)

Thank you Jean, all finished now, needed a small jab of oxytocin to get the last two pups out. Nix and her babies are doing great this morning. Yes, definitely a few more grey hairs today !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :-)
